Iraqi Official Wants Law Based on Islam
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=540&ncid=716&e=8&u=/ap/20040210/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_islamic_law

<snip>

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq (news - web sites)'s current top official has demanded that Islam be the principal basis for Iraq's laws, a move that breaches a previous agreement among the framers of the interim constitution and creates the possibility that Islamic law could rule the land.

If approved, the proposal could have broad effects on secular Iraq, taking away rights of women in divorce and inheritance cases, shuttering liquor stores and banning gambling, legal advisers here say. Elements also run counter to President Bush (news - web sites)'s goal of turning Iraq into a beacon for democracy in the Middle East.

"There could be changes in the Iraqi state," said Salem Chalabi, a legal adviser to the Governing Council and a member of the 10-member committee framing the basic transitional law, which acts as an interim constitution and is to take effect at the end of this month.

"If someone proposes a law of inheritance that conflicts with sharia, or Islam, then it's invalid," Chalabi said. "The registration of liquor stores may become illegal."

....good going aWol*!

1. Another Chalabi?
Edited on Tue Feb-10-04 06:32 AM by 0007
Why is the U. S. still doing business with Ahmed Chalabi? Now we have Salem Chalabi stacking the deck.

http://www.corpwatch.org/news/PND.jsp?articleid=8708

"In an interview, Zell said Salem Chalabi owns the Baghdad law firm, while Zell helped create the idea and is marketing the firm to U.S. and other clients. Zell said his previous 15-year partnership with Feith, and Salem Chalabi's family ties, are separate from the work the pair is doing in Iraq.

"It has nothing to do with Chalabi or Doug Feith," Zell said."

Is this a joke or what?

2. Conservatives should have no problem with this
after all, they claim that the laws of the United States are based on Christianity. They should be jumping for joy at the idea of a 'faith based' government.

3. Like no one saw this one coming. This is exactly what was predicted
if we went in and dismantled the secular government of Iraq.

I agree, Saddam was a horrible person, a cruel and nasty man. But for anyone who thought that bringing down his government would create the 'ideal Middle Eastern democracy' that would influence the rest of the area, they we just dreaming (and that't putting it mildly). No one involved in the planning of this mess understood, or took the time to understand, what was happening in the Middle East and how what the Bush* administration actions would just throw that place into the arms of the Islamic fundamentalists. Now they act surprised.

4. This is going to be the result
of Bush introducing democracy to Iraq! The Iraqis have been liberated, and now when they vote for an Islamic government in a free election, the coalition has no business being against it. Maybe Bush will find a way to force an Iraqi Hamid Karzai on them. But then it wouldn't be democracy.

8. It didnt take a rocket scientist to know this would happen
we all knew it..everytime the US sets up a puppet regime in the ME it turns into civil war and Islamic fundamentalists take over..
You cant force your own ideas of democracy on anyone, as someone said earlier "democracy has to start from the bottom up, not forced as an idea from top down"
bU$sh did exactly what Bin Laden and Al Queda had hoped for..he created strife and opened up a hornets nest that is now creating civil war in Iraq..just as we all knew
Now our kids are sitting ducks and dying daily for this
and they cant even provide body armour to the Humvees (wasnt in the budget this year) and flak vests..
when Gore says Bush is a traitor to the USA, he is seriously RIGHT
