McCain reminds Biden he's been tested in crisis

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Republican John McCain told voters in this key electoral state Tuesday he was personally tested by the same kind of crisis that Democratic vice presidential nominee Joseph Biden warned Barack Obama will almost certainly face if elected president.

McCain recalled being ready to launch a bombing run during the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, which Biden said over the weekend tested a new President John F. Kennedy and was the template for the kind of "generated crisis" the 47-year-old Obama would face within six months of taking office.

"I was on board the USS Enterprise," McCain, a former naval aviator, said in the capital city of Harrisburg. "I sat in the cockpit, on the flight deck of the USS Enterprise, off of Cuba. I had a target. My friends, you know how close we came to a nuclear war."

As the crowd of several thousand began to swell with cheers and applause, he added with dramatic effect: "America will not have a president who needs to be tested. I've been tested, my friends."

Being tested is one thing -- passing is something else entirely.

McCain should know that, given his rank in his Naval Academy class, and his problems with keeping airplanes in the air.

Not all captives did that - but McCain did.

AFAIK, the only tests she's faced are the ones she had in college, like the one that earned her a D in macroeconomics.

When the famous missile went off on the Forrestal went off and destroyed his plane. Rather than helping to fight the fires which killed almost 200 of his fellow crewmen, he went down to the ready room and hung out watching things on the Closed Circuit TV. When danger came and needed leadership, McCain left. Several of his fellow pilots who also were in planes did personally help lead fire fighting efforts during the confusion and mayhem so this was not a case where there was lack of opportunity.

To add insult to injury, McCain made it a point to seek out journalists covering the fire and took one of the first planes out.

So in summary, McCain
- ran away from danger - check
- avoided responsibility - check
- sought to glorify himself - check

Sounds like an "F" to me.

I found a link to all US Naval Vessels involved the "Cuban Missle Crisis" and The Enterprise is listed but McFiber's squadron (VA-65)is not listed on ship at that time.

Sorry, JohnBoy. You weren't there to be "tested." You were there to follow orders. The person GIVING the ultimate orders is the one being "tested." That's the way it works.

I think not. This has nothing to do with what Joe Biden was talking about and is just another ridiculous assertion by McCainthat further illustrates the absolute desperation of his campaign.

This implies that the order was executed (and successfully).

He wasn't given the order during the CMC so he's not even *that* close
to being a leader ... just another dumb figurehead (like W) ready to
carry out the orders of his masters without having to do a damn thing
involving thinking for himself.

Sitting in your plane waiting for SOMEONE ELSE to tell you what to do is not leadership. Now, I'm not saying that it's would be easy to fly a fighter plane or drop a nuclear weapon, but to claim that shows he's been "tested", bullshit. Unless you're the one handing the crisis or giving orders, you are not in a leadership position.

And does he really want to remind people that he was involved in the Bay of Pigs all those decades ago?
