Reed calls Harkin ‘Tokyo Rose of al Qaida’
Source: The Iowa Independent

Republican Senate candidate Christopher Reed called incumbent Democrat Tom Harkin “Tokyo Rose” and “anti-American” because he provides “aid and comfort to the enemy.”

The statement came during a debate aired on Iowa Public Television and moderated by the Des Moines Register columnist David Yepsen.

“We’re taking advice from somebody who has an eight-year history of becoming the Tokyo Rose of al Qaida and Middle East terrorism,” said Reed, a political newcomer from from Marion.

Yepsen asked what Reed meant by the term “Tokyo Rose.”

“Providing aid and comfort to the enemy,” Reed said, later adding Harkin has sided with the enemies of the United States. ...

1. It's becoming screamingly obvious
that all these right wing idiots are getting their talking points from the same source.

The ideology of Karl Rove is alive and well.

2. from an email from Tom Harkin:
Earlier today, Iowa Public Television hosted a candidate forum with myself and Republican challenger Chris Reed.

During the debate, Mr. Reed accused me of being the "Tokyo Rose" of al Qaeda. He later clarified the term by accusing me of "providing aid and comfort to the enemy" and "of giving our enemies the playbook."

As someone who has proudly worn the uniform of our country and who has served the people of Iowa in the United States Senate, this is a disgraceful attack. It has to end. It has to end today.

We have real crises in this country -- two major wars, an economic crisis and a housing crisis. We must address these critical issues without the Rovian smears that have ignited a divisive environment in Washington and on the campaign trail.

Too often in recent weeks, Republicans have made outlandish and hateful accusations.

I know you've been outraged by their comments. Just a few days ago, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann accused Barack Obama of being un-American on national television. And Sarah Palin continues to accuse Barack Obama of "palling around with terrorists." These attacks should never be part of our political discourse.

If you are sick and tired of the division and attacks, then please do something about it.

Please go vote. Go vote today if you can - there are polling places open all across the state. Call three friends and go vote today.

The best way to overcome negativity and to reject the politics of hate and division is to repudiate the Party and the people who make these charges.

You have the power to repudiate these attacks --- please go vote.

In friendship and service,

Tom

All I can add is that these people are disgusting.

6. Flood this guy with messages on his campaign website. Here's mine
You may reach him here: http://www.christopherreed2008.com/contactme.html

Dear Mr. Reed:
I just learned of the accusations and name calling you directed at Senator Harkin during your debate with him. Needless to say, I find your remarks disgusting. This great nation of ours has no need for people of your ilk in government. I am assuming your remarks are based on Senator Harkin's criticism of treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. Mr. Reed, any believer in the founding principles of our nation should be equally critical! In the oath of office you took as a Naval Officer (I am a former Air Force Officer)you swore to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. You should be thanking Senator Harkin for doing just that! Incidentally, you will hopefully never have the opportunity to take that same oath as a Senator!
Perhaps you should learn to think for yourself, instead of subscribing to the Karl Rove methods of campaigning. Americans are sick, tired and disgusted with your brand of divisiveness, accusations and name calling. You dishonor your country and the military you served.
Sincerely,
//s//

11. That's an excellent response by Sen. Harkin
Mr. Reed and the Republicans are completely out of material and ideas. Hence they resort to personal attacks and buzz words.

I just visited Mr. Reed's website, and here is what I found in less than ten seconds:

<snip>

My name is Christopher Reed. I am not a politician, I am not a rich elitist. I am someone who wants to be your next senator, so I can represent you with solid conservative principles and true Iowa values.

I was born and raised in the small eastern Iowa town of Solon. I especially enjoyed my days growing up in a small, rural community where everyone knew everyone else, and we were all "neighbors". During my years at Solon High School I participated in varsity wrestling. That experience taught me I have to fight my own battles but the team always comes first.

Readability: Third grade.

I know Iowa. They're a hell of a lot smarter than this guy.

13. Not necessary
Harkin is beloved in Iowa, even by most of the conservatives. 538.com has Harkin winning by 25.2%.

The race to watch in Iowa will IA-4. Tom Latham, the GOP incumbent, is battling Becky Greenwald. This has become a horse-race. If Greenwald wins, she will be the first female U.S. representative for Iowa. I am optimistic about this race, because we evicted two GOP reps in 2006. (This is out of 5 reps, one of which was already Dem.)

(My district, IA-5, should also be flipped, but I am not optimistic on that race. Steve King has too many fans in Western Iowa.)

7. Great, got a Nazi right here in my state.
Tom's one of the nicest fellows around. Even helping my dad out who's a Republican. ( VA related )Chris must have been brainwashed when he was young. Has a serious disconnect on what it is to be an American. I think he meant South American.... maybe near Venezuela.... sorry we leave up here in the United States.. bye bye

12. "Yepsen asked what Reed meant by the term Tokyo Rose."
"Providing aid and comfort to the enemy, Reed said, later adding Harkin has sided with the enemies of the United States"

Obviously that idiot have no idea what was Tokyo Rose.

"Tokyo Rose (alternate spelling Tokio Rose) was a generic name given by Allied forces in the South Pacific during World War II to any of approximately a dozen English-speaking female broadcasters of Japanese propaganda.Their intent was to disrupt the morale of Allied forces listening to the broadcast near the Japanese mainland "

So these women were providing aid and comfort to the enemy? Moran!

16. These GOPper idiots always mangle their history
You'd think they didn't really know much about it or something. :eyes:

Of course, Tokyo Rose and her Western counterpart(s), like Lord Haw-Haw, were all working for...um...governments that were just a logical extension of far-right politics, i.e., REAL Fascists.

e.g., the most popular broadcaster of many using the name Lord Haw-Haw, William Joyce, belonged to Oswald Mosley's British Union of Fascists.

The Allies had the last haw-haw on Joyce. They hanged him for treason in 1946.
