... “Given the inherent limitations of the verification system and the language of the Help America Vote Act it is plainly apparent that it is not to be used as a sole basis to determine a voter’s eligibility or even to cause that voter to vote provisionally,” Brunner wrote in her directive to election officials.
Brunner, a Democrat, has been fighting with the Ohio Republican Party about the matching process. On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court stayed a temporary restraining order sought by the GOP, which would have required thousands of newly registered Ohio voters to undergo extra scrutiny through election-board investigations of mismatches.
After the high court’s ruling, a Republican fund-raiser filed suit over the same issue in Ohio Supreme Court, but he later withdrew the case. ...
