Ind. Supreme Court won't rush early voting tiff
Edited on Fri Oct-24-08 04:55 PM by cal04

The Indiana Supreme Court delivered Barack Obama a victory Friday.

The court sided with Democrats and union members against Republicans seeking to shutter early voting sites in Gary, Hammond and East Chicago.

In a 3-2 vote, the state's highest court said voting centers in the three largely Democratic Lake County cities should remain open and that closing them could jeopardize residents' right to vote.

Republicans argue the voting centers increase the risk of voter fraud and that state law only allows one such voting center - at the clerk's main office in the county seat of Crown Point - unless both parties agreed to additional locations.

1. Repugs have lost every attempt to shut down early voting

Since they're getting creamed 2-to-1 in early voting, when they've always had the edge, it's easy to understand why they're panicking.

2. The Indiana Supreme Court delivered to THE VOTERS a victory Friday
By defending the right to vote. It shouldn't matter whether it helps Barack Obama or not. Damn Media Spin!

3. After the election, watch for GOP efforts to shut down these early voting procedures.
They now realize that letting the little people vote easily is not good for them.

9. IMO we need sweeping mandatory national standards for Congressional and Presidential
elections. Any state that won't follow to the letter a strict set of mandatory Federal rules set by Spencer Overton and Chris Edley should not get a penny of federal money, and should be open to federal election tampering lawsuits that pay cash to whistleblowers and disfranchised voters.

4. Indiana GOP is also trying to disenfranchise voters that were evicted from homes and apartments
The GOP is not a political party, but a criminal enterprise and should be treated as such.

7. I think "voter fraud" is Republican lingo for black people voting.
I first saw this in 1992 when Clinton won. I worked at a very conservative company in Atlanta back then, and the ugliness I saw on the morning after election day completely blew my mind. It was painfully obvious to me and several other women in my department that some of our female coworkers thought their votes should count for more than other people's, particularly black people's. I saw several long-standing friendships blow up that day.

10. Divided Ind. Supreme Court sides with Democrats, won't hear expedited appeal in Lake Co. case
Source: By KEN KUSMER | Associated Press Writer

A divided Indiana Supreme Court on Friday rejected a effort by Republicans to shutter satellite early voting sites in three largely Democratic cities near Chicago.

The state's highest court, voting 3-2, declined to grant a GOP request to rush its appeal of a special judge's ruling this week that the voting centers in the Lake County cities of Gary, Hammond and East Chicago should remain open and that closing them could jeopardize residents' right to vote.

Republican attorneys had wanted the high court to take the case directly, with both sides submitting arguments next week. Instead the matter was left with an appellate court where a more deliberate briefing schedule almost certainly means the ruling will remain in place through Election Day ,,,

13. Count every vote
and quit trying to block votes.

These people are voting because they are interested in making democracy work. Some of them vote for your guy, some vote for the other guy. That is how a democracy works. EVERYONE gets to have a say!! If you can't deal with that, please leave -- go find a dictatorship somewhere -- you are obviously not capable of functioning in our country.

That said...
HEY EVERYONE, GO VOTE!!!

14. It says two Indiana Supreme Court judges ruled to bypass the system and hear the case
Shame on them. Some serious work needs to be done in the entire judicial system.

15. It's completely spurious...

It's completely spurious. The pukes are opposing more than one voting location because they say it would lead necessarily to fraud. But then this same argument would seem to indicate that you couldn't have polling places in your own neighborhood.

No wonder they're getting knocked around by judges. They love the law and the GOP is trying to make a mockery out of it.
