Ohio Engine Plant Lays Off More Than 280 Workers
Source: AP

POSTED: 1:24 pm EDT October 26, 2008

MORAINE, Ohio -- Several hundred workers at a General Motors-Isuzu truck engine plant near Dayton are about to be laid off.

Courtney Stickler, a spokeswoman at the DMAX plant in Moraine, says 282 hourly workers and up to 25 salaried employees will be let go by Nov. 17 as the facility moves to a single production shift.

The cuts would leave the plant with 435 hourly workers.

The company -- a joint venture between GM and Isuzu -- told state officials in September that it was planning the cuts. Officials said orders for the plant's diesel engines have fallen off.

The plant makes engines for the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra heavy-duty truck models, as well as the Kodiak and Topkick heavy-duty trucks.

4. It doesn't have to be this way
It doesn't have to be this way. What GM should do if they are concerned about employees is stagger the layoff. I believe they have 6 months of unemployement compensation. The first batch of layoffs should be called back in 6 months and then layoff the second batch. This gives a lot of breathing room for business to recover and employees to find other work if need be.

Does anyone know where Ohio & MIchigans unemployment funds stand? I heard there were a few States that were not going to have enough money in the near future.

3. I read that Michigan.....
was running out of funds or already ran out of funds and had to ask the federal government for a loan? I may be way off base, but I know Michigan is one of the states they mentioned.

6. Part of
Part of the bailout program included a request for an extension to the unemployement program. I believe it was shot down and the white house spokesman (Dana Perino ) said people should get a job.

Then they will fight tooth and nail for the big wigs to get their fat checks for screwing everyone otherwise they won't play ball.
