Male transsexual gene link found

Sunday, 26 October 2008

Australian researchers have identified a significant link between a gene involved in testosterone action and male transsexualism.

DNA analysis from 112 male-to-female transsexual volunteers showed they were more likely to have a longer version of the androgen receptor gene.

The genetic difference may cause weaker testosterone signals, the team reported in Biological Psychiatry.

However, other genes are also likely to play a part, they stressed.

Increasingly, biological factors are being implicated in gender identity.

I thought that sexual orientation and gender identity were lifestyle choices. :eyes:

If gender identity is genetic, why did our Democratic Senators oppose to include the transgender as a protected class in ENDA?

2. This is a big fear of mine....
As we become able to recognize these genetic markers, abortion for children possessing these traits will likely increase.

5. Well, no cloud without a silver lining...
If they figure out they can abort "gay" fetuses, betcha they toss Roe v. Wade under the bus in a New York minute.

Sorry. I don't mean to be cruel and insensitive and I do share your concern. But I have to admit the concept of some of these vile wackjobs trying to reconcile their need to keep women under control with their terror of 'teh gay!' is rather piquant.

conflictedly,
Bright

7. you assume they actually believe in scientific findings
My bet is they will dogmatically deny these studies, because it attacks the foundation of their sexual morality - that people choose their sexuality and hence must be punished for wrong choices

9. More likely...
It will be considered a genetic disease. I'm sure that there will be gene therapies and all sorts of treatments created quickly.

19. parent of a genetic Cornell student, here, and it's not that simple or easy to predict
In each person there are millions of genetic markers for millions of quirks, but there are so many variables that affect those predispositions, that science will not easily be able to isolate these kinds of things.

More likely, the big ones will get looked at like cancer and alzheimers, obesity, and possibly alchoholism. Little stuff like this are just to obscure to screen for.

In other words, if you took a genetic sample of a fetus and screened for things as obscure as this, you'd come up with almost endless possible scenarios, many of them contradictory, with no way to realistically predict which ones will actually become activated. You'd be presented with so much bewildering data with such low predictability, that no fetus would likely please you. You'd give up and just have the baby.

The obvious exception would be big hereditary things like (spelling) sicle cell anemia, or other fatal respiratory/nervous system/blood conditions that present in a parent and are a serious worry.

There are also way too many extra or silent genes that never get activated, to worry about these kinds of outliers.

21. Well, scientific explanations for all human conditions are just waiting to be discovered.
To me, it's obvious that there's a physical reason for someone longing for gender reassignment. Anyone with basic scientific education understands that all embryos start out female, then a genetic marker turns on the testosterone. Considering how many mutations can occur during the first trimester of pregnancy, why not an incomplete gender marker? Doesn't that make perfect sense, since all trannies say the same thing: from as young as they can remember, they've never "felt right" about their gender.

But even more important, why can't we as a society be enlightened enough to accept EVERYONE in the LGBT community for what they are and not care so much about the cause???? Personally, I've never been beaten, robbed or even vaguely threatened by a tranny--why would I revile them for the life they want?

For the record, I think transpeople are just as awesome and sexy and cool as nontrans.
