McCain is feeling the heat in Arizona: Some polls suggest home state is up for grabs
Source: Los Angeles Times

Reporting from Phoenix -- John McCain has easily won every political race he has run in Arizona, so it is not surprising that Republicans and Democrats alike assumed the senator would hold his own state in the presidential contest.

But that was before the economy tanked and foreclosure signs sprouted like saguaro in the desert. It was before the registration of Democrats and independents outpaced Republicans; before presidential polls showed a shrinking, single-digit advantage for McCain over Barack Obama, his Democratic rival.

Suddenly, both sides are throwing resources at Arizona. Voters began receiving automated phone calls this week from the Republican camp warning that Obama's election would invite a "major international crisis he will be unprepared to handle," and that Democrats in full control of government would "give civil rights to terrorists."

On Friday, the Obama campaign announced it would run an upbeat spot in the last four days of the race touting the Illinois senator's endorsements by former Secretary of State Colin Powell and economic giant Warren Buffett. Move On.org will run its own ads showing McCain struggling to hold on to his state.

Arizona's crimson has turned purple on several electoral maps, and some political analysts have moved it from the McCain column to "leaning McCain." Some polls suggest the state is up for grabs.

23. They've still got Utah.
Unless McCain french kisses a dude, kicks Mitt Romney in the nuts or takes a whiz on statue of Joe Smith between now and Tuesday.

2. I counted exactly 3 McC/P yard signs
on my drives around my huge, generally very conservative,(but not gated) senior community outside Phoenix. In '04 and '00 there were forests of Bush/Cheney signs.

3. Even if we don't win Arizona,
the fact that McCain has to dump some of his limited resources into Arizona helps us a lot in other states that McCain will have to pull resources out of.

16. Me too, and I've only seen one McCain/Palin
yard sign so far for miles and miles and zero bumper stickers. I have seen one girl with an Obama shirt in the super-market. We have received several calls from the Obama campaign in the past week and they told us they have registered over 60,000 new voters, Dems who have not voted for years.

I saw no signs for either campaign until the past week. I think neither wanted to spend time or money in a state both believed would go to McCain. Everyone in our household will be voting for Obama and even my normally Repub SIL, surprised us this week, and said she 'hasn't made up her mind'. She is in CA though, but that really was a surprise.

17. Hey sabrina 1....
:hi: Welcome to DU :hi:

I've been seeing Obama signs for at least 2 months...Have 2 in my very own circle (one is mine of course LOL)...and about 5 more on the way to 89A.

I have heard of quite a few repubs that refuse to vote for McCain...some even said they'll vote Obama.

My fingers are crossed.

Oh, think there is an Obama rally in VOC today! It will be very visible for all the tourists!

22. Hi and thanks Desertrose
I am in the Prescott/Prescott vly area and have seen so little related to the election here, that I just assumed Repubs weren't all that excited about McCain, but would drag themselves out to vote for him anyhow.

I haven't gone into every development, :-) but just driving around the lack of bumper stickers, signs etc. really struck me. I've seen, eg, signs for local elections on the highways, but none for McCain or Obama. What a thrill it would be if Obama won AZ without even trying!

Anyhow, thanks for the welcome and good for you on the sign. I am really just visiting here, came from NY to spend some time in AZ last Fall and expected the place to be littered with McCain signs and bumper stickers! Nearly everyone I've met here is from somewhere else, like CA or Penn or NY. so maybe that helps a bit also. Whatever, it is a surprise to see the race get so close so fast.

See way more Obama signs there Driving through Payson last week I saw more McCain/Palin signs, but that's pretty heavy GOP country (70% maybe?).

And I hope that it does.

I'm also still hoping that my birth state of MT will see the light. Obama's made some good efforts there and those efforts are bearing fruit. Most polls have asked about McCan't and Obama only, but Ron Paul is still on the ballot there. Paul was much more popular there than McCan't ever was. I am also not sure whether the polls have adjusted properly for the impact of new ... and younger ... voters. People will be watching closely at the polls.

The 50-state strategy is common sense. But it took Howard Dean's example, and Obama's able implementation, before many would see that.

18. Shout out to Arizona Republicans!!!!
Don't listen to any of this crap! There is no way McCain can lose Arizona!

So just go shopping. Check the guide American idol might be on.

You don't have to go to the polls on Tuesday, Gov Palin's got everything worked out.

Stay away from the polls, go back to sleep, we will call you Wednesday morning and inform you of the outcome.
