Police, demonstrators clash at Prop. 8 protest

Several people are arrested after about 500 break away from rally in West Hollywood.

Protesters demonstrating against Proposition 8, the gay marriage ban that voters approved Tuesday, clashed with police in Hollywood late Wednesday. The Los Angeles Police Department issued a citywide tactical alert, requiring all available officers to respond to the protest, LAPD spokesman Officer Jason Lee said.

Several people were arrested when a group of about 500 people broke away from the larger demonstration that began in West Hollywood earlier in the evening. Lee said that as the protesters moved along Hollywood Boulevard, they tried to cross a line of officers. In one case, a demonstrator jumped onto a police car.

Despite the arrests, the protest was mostly peaceful, Lee said.

Police were stopping traffic along Sunset Boulevard in an attempt to move protesters there, Lee said.

1. I'm glad there was a protest...
...and wish I'd been available to show my support and attend. I'm so glad it was peaceful, as I hate to see people getting hurt at the hands of LAPD. They are not at all shy about beating up minorities, some seem to enjoy it. :(

4. It is sad.
:( It broke my heart to see the way they treated people at the Immigration protests in Los Angeles, this past year. They beat up a newscaster and his crew from a spanish language station.

5. LAPD police "beat" protester at Anti-Prop 8 rally
I saw this disturbing video footage of the LAPD beating a protestor at an anti-Prop. 8 rally in West Hollywood on the BBC news web site:

I was really surprised to discover that there wasn't any coverage of this beating in California web media.
