Lieberman pondering 'options' after Reid meeting
Source: CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Connecticut independent Sen. Joe Lieberman said Thursday he needs a few days to ponder "the options that I have before me" after a meeting with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Lieberman did not explain what those options were when he made brief remarks to reporters, and Reid said afterward that no decisions have been made.

...

With Democrats gaining at least five seats on Tuesday, Reid summoned Lieberman to discuss his future with the caucus. In a statement issued after the meeting, Reid said Thursday's meeting was "the first of what I expect to be several conversations."

"While I understand that Senator Lieberman has voted with Democrats a majority of the time, his comments and actions have raised serious concerns among many in our caucus," he said. "I expect there to be additional discussions in the days to come, and Senator Lieberman and I will speak to our caucus in two weeks to discuss further steps."

He has lost face, even asking him to do Seppuku would not be GOOD ENOUGH to erase his treachery. In the old days of Japan,... well lets just say, he would not be worth his weight in rice.

I love the painting.. :D

In other words, Harry is going to let the caucus decide Holy Joe's fate. Joe cannot be happy about that. I expect he will be talking to Mitch as he "ponders".

18. Let him go... Here's why?
1. Reid and the Dem leadership *must* punish him for his idiocy.

2. Regardless, Dems will likely not have the filibuster-proof majority.

3. We need *real* Democrats in leadership positions, not phonies like LIEberman.

4. It will send a message to others that they cannot stab the party in the back and get away with it.

Obama should appoint him to his cabinet.
Then a real Democrat can be appointed to fill his Senate seat.

He'd be fine in anything not related to foreign policy or Homeland Security.

25. CT Gov. Rell is GOP.
When Joe Lieberman ran for VP in 2000, the GOP governor at that time was going to appoint Nancy Johnson to replace him...now it is widely thought to be Chris Shays instead. Point is...Lieberman's replacement would be a Republican.

I am sorry but I wouldn't want Lieberman anywhere the Democratic Caucus or any high level meetings of the party or committees. I wouldn't trust him to, if he didn't like what was being proposed, not pass on information to the Republicans for his own selfish purposes.

41. Exactly....
... I called Reid's office this morning and made that point. I also told the assistant that the best thing that he ( Reid ) could do to score LOTS of points with Dems would be to completely cut traitor joe off from all Dem committees, etc., and to just banish the turncoat from our Party.
Reid's office: 202-224-3542. I don't think Reid understands the level of anti-joe there is with loyal Dems. Let him know.

go to Iraq and become a human shield

get bitten by a family of rabid skunks

34. Lieberman is a close personal friend to Reid and many other senior Democrats.
That is why they are so loathe to dump him. However, at this point there is little choice. Lieberman has turned his back on his friends in a frustrated attempt to catapult himself to greater power and is now coming back with his tail between his legs trying to schmooze his way back into the Dems good graces. But no matter how well loved he may be on the Hill, he is hated by the base and even by many in the Senate so he must go. If Reid gives him a slap on the wrist or ignores the situation he will first lose any control over the Senate and in two years will lose his majority because the base will be dispirited.

It really does come down to losing Holy Joe or losing the Senate, Harry. What do you choose?

37. And we and his constituents all invite him to continue voting with us 90% of the time. Your point?
Edited on Thu Nov-06-08 08:27 PM by Dr Fate
Whether he is still qualified be in any positions of trust or power is something that all DEMS should consider- be they purists, grownups, DLCers or whatever. He clearly is not.

Lieberman should not hold any positions of trust in the Senate-If he wants to stop voting the way his BLUE CT constituents want him to as some sort of pay-back, that is his funeral.

We need his vote, and his constituents expect him to give it to us- but that doesn't mean he should be on committees, etc.

Lieberman cant risk being known as an Anti-Obama obstructionist in BLUE CT/new England- so making excuses & outs for him & Harry doesnt make sense to me.

49. I understand you are being obtuse.
Lieberman's seniority is what is on the line here. If he is stripped of his standing in the party, he has no seniority, and the next in line LOYAL Democratic Senator gets a chair. Loyalty should be rewarded, disloyalty should be punished.

Why in the hell can Reid not "make a decision". Lieberman made the decision when he decided to bash Obama and support McCain. What in God's name is there to discuss? He is not the democrats friend! What else can he do to prove that? Piss in Reid's face? Why can't they throw his sleazy, slimmy, 2 faced weasely ass out? NOW. GONE. ZIP. What is the problem here? Can somebody PLEASE TELL ME? Maybe somebody needs to make a decision about REID! Enough of this wishy washy crap already. Sorry for the rant. I just do not understand anyone being hesitant to let Lieberman go.
