DeVos rules out 2010 run for governor
BY DAWSON BELL • FREE PRESS LANSING BUREAU • NOVEMBER 12, 2008

LANSING – Dick DeVos, the Grand Rapids businessman and unsuccessful 2006 Republican candidate for governor, has decided not to run again in 2010, leaving the field wide open.

DeVos, in an interview with the Web site www.rightmichigan.com posted this afternoon, said running for governor again is “not where I’m going to be able to best serve the people of Michigan.”

He left the door open for a possible bid for governor or other office farther down the road, but said family considerations and the experience of the 2006 campaign combined to rule out running in 2010.

DeVos, the son of Amway cofounder Richard DeVos and a former chairman of the company, spent more than $30 million of his own money in his unsuccessful bid to unseat Gov. Jennifer Granholm in 2006.

Maybe his BIL, Eric Prince of Blackwater, will run in his place.

10. He's not a businessman. He's an Amway salesman. Sheesh, there's a difference!

6. If he got into office, yes, he's dangerous
But he is such a bad candidate, I find it hard to imagine him winning.

8. I'm from a very red county northwest of Grand Rapids.
DeVos was so off the wall that the county went blue for Granholm and Stabenow in 2006. I don't think that it ever went blue for either office in my memory, which goes back to the '70s.

He was THAT bad.

4. Yay
Now I won't have to resurrect that extra "Don't Dick with Michigan" bumper sticker I have left over from the 2006 election.

5. NO!!
I was looking forward to him running again. He is the worst politician ever. When he speaks, it's like a robot talking. The candidate with the most money usually wins. He spent 41 million dollars compared Jennifer Granholm who only spent 14 million....and got beat by 14%. I think the Democratic candidate would have a better chance of winning against DeVos than against many of the other candidates.

9. I actually would be surprised if it's him
I think it might be Terri Lynn Land. For me, Mike Cox would be the worst because I just can't tolerate him being Governor. After the lawsuit he pushed to prevent gay partners from receiving job benefits from public institutions (at the same time he was having an extramarital affair), I have a strong hatred of him. I would seriously consider moving out of state if that man is elected to represent me.

11. Mike Cox white-washed the original investigation into Kwame's stripper party
He called the party an urban legend. Not only that, he accused Fieger of trying to blackmail him about his philandering.

Ted Nugent has been talking about moving back and running for Governor. I'd like that. He's an idiot. When he had his radio show, I caught it one day when he was going off about this poor woman from the music industry who wrote him to complain about how she was railroaded into prison. He defended her on his show, without researching anything about her.

The woman's name is Alberta Easter, and she did indeed once work for one of the music companies, Motown, I think. In 1987, she and two of her sons got in an armed standoff with the Inkster Police at the Motel Bungalow on Michigan AVE. They killed the cops who had come to deliver an arrest warrant on check-kiting charges, and then held the rest of them off for several hours, pretending that the cops they killed were alive and hostages.

So, I think it would be great for democrats if Ted Nugent were to be the GOP candidate for Governor.

12. Wouldn't that be fantastic if Nugent ran!?!
I do remember him saying he would run in 2006 if Granholm won in 2002. He backed then so I don't see him actually running for Governor. It would be great for the Democrats if he ever did though. I think whoever DeVos (and his money) gets behind will be the GOP nominee.

If Cox was the GOP candidate, the Dems would have a lot of things to use against him, like the white-wash of the stripper party and his adultery. He probably would be one of the easier candidates to beat from the GOP. But with him as the GOP nominee, there is the risk that he will win and like I said, I don't think I could tolerate him being my Governor.

13. I don't think the GOP will end up nominating Cox
The West Michigan GOP wouldn't be very supportive of him. They might get daring and nominate a black conservative like Hardiman, former Kentwood mayor. Or go moderate and nominate Gorcyca (which I hope they don't do, because out of all of them, he could actually win).

The only democrat whose name I have heard, other than the Lt. Governor, is Dennnis Archer. He was a good mayor, and he is liked in Oakland County.

I hope Kym Worthy runs for AG, unless she gets appointed as a judge in federal court. If she became AG, she could follow in Granholm's footsteps and run for governor a few years later.

14. I agree with you
I heard Dennis Archer mentioned too and he is my pick as of now (still time for more candidates to appear). I have no issues with John Cherry but I'm just not sure he's the best choice.

Glad you mentioned Kym Worthy for AG. She would do well if she ran...especially after the way she held Kwame Kilpatrick accountable. Now we just need a good Democratic candidate for Secretary of State. I haven't heard any names mentioned for SOS but I hope the Dems find a strong candidate.
