Former Gov. Milliken takes on Obama, Granholm and economy
Source: Detroit News

SOUTHFIELD -- Former Michigan Gov. William Milliken made some surprising comments Sunday to Spotlight on the News on Detroit News reporting partner WXZY-TV (Channel 7).

Milliken, 86, was Michigan's longest serving governor. In an interview with Chuck Stokes, Milliken expressed support for President-elect Barack Obama, Gov. Jennifer Granholm and shared his views on the Michigan Supreme Court.

Voting for Obama: "My reaction was one of great excitement ... it is a remarkable thing that he has accomplished. It is remarkable because it is reverberating across the world. I voted for Sen. Obama for president and I have no regrets about having done that. He was far and away the best person to lead this country in a very critical and dangerous time." . . .

They don't get any classier than Bill Milliken, Michigan's longest serving governor.

And they don't make moderate Republicans like him anymore. I love this man. A total class act.

15. Milliken is to the left of Bill Clinton
Milliken is not a moderate, he is a liberal. He supports abortion rights, is opposed to the death penalty and has endorsed democratic candidates for governor and president consistently over the past 15 years or so. He's a republican from the days before Reagan, when the religious right took over the party of business and commerce.

Plus, my grandpa knows him personally, and likes him despite his liberal politics. Even conservatives in Traverse City are environmentalists-the issue he and my grandpa agree on.

People like Milliken are an endangered species.

21. I voted for him twice
Once against Zolton Ferency -- another great man who would have been a fine governor.
John
I'd happily vote for Bill Milliken again if he was running. One of a kind and much beloved by both sides of the aisle here in Michigan. It makes me very happy to read that he voted for Obama.

2. A good man who shows that honor transcends party.
Gov. Milliken has always looked out for the best interests of our state. I'm sure he is greatly saddened that his party has become so hateful and deceptive.

3. A total class act. I'm sure Gerald Ford would also condemn Rush/Hannity.
Hell, even Reagan wouldn't put up with those pukes.

5. He did.
I also think that George Romney would be sickened to see what his son has become in the name of ambition.

20. The irony about Ford is that he is from one of the most conservative districts
Grand Rapids, MI, where I grew up. He was never a conservative, always a moderate. He was pro-choice, for example. Grand Rapids has changed since those days, but it was always a pretty conservative place in the 70s and 80s.

The conservtive GR republicans spent a fortune on the Ford Museum, though, considering 1. He was never elected President and 2. He only served for a little over 2 years.

Something I have not sensed since.

He made it look easy.

6. I always felt the same way about Jim Blanchard.
Blanchard made some very tough decisions in order to fix the mess this state was in, but he turned things around and was the one to tried to diversify the state's economy. If it hadn't been for the corrupt mayor of Detroit (sounds like an oxymoron, lately), Coleman Young, he could have followed through and done much to keep us out of the mess we're in today.

13. Blanchard was outstanding, Milliken remains sublime.
Coleman's corruption was petty, his lack of vision let racism and petty politics ruin the city of Detroit.

No governor could overcome the auto companies control. They drove the other businesses out by destroying our transportation, and no one could have protected us from this Bush cabal ruining car sales. A longer Blanchard administration would have reduced the impact somewhat.

9. He seems like a great guy
It just shows you how far the Republican party has fallen. If we had had Republicans like him (one's who would do their job and move the state forward) in the Michigan Congress, maybe we could have prevented some of the pain Michigan has gone through. Instead, they just did nothing in the hope of someone defeating Granholm. It will be interesting to see if the Republican party will regroup and become more like Milliken or will the extremists win and push the party toward the Bush/Palin types.

14. Bill Miliken lives in my town, I went to school with his niece and he is a class act
every which way. He's an environmentalist, endorsed Kerry in 2004 & has nearly always spoken for the right side in both local & national matters.

18. You live in Traverse City? My retirement destination.
Got a few years to go, but I absolutely love it there. Got it all: Transcendent beauty, culture, shopping, fishing, golf, restaurants and of course the wineries.

And some good friends.

Have a cold one at the You & I for me. Best perch I had all year I had there in August.

17. It is a shame that there are not more like Milliken in politics today
Even the most moderate Republicans in politics today are nowhere near what the old-time moderate Republicans used to be. Milliken is a class act and we need more like him

22. Thanks for posting this, Faygokid. Both Milliken and Blanchard were and are class acts.
A friend of mine from my days at UM ('77 LSA GO BLUE!) worked for Blanchard on the Hill. He had nothing but great things to say about him.

Milliken was the last Republican I voted for above the local level in my teeny home town. The Dems there have had trouble coming up with good candidates, and I have voted for Milliken-esque, competent Republicans when I have voted back in Michigan.
