Study: One in three toys found to have toxic chemicals
Edited on Wed Dec-03-08 02:05 PM by Robbien
Source: Kare11 Local MN News

A local company released its second annual consumer guide to toxic chemicals in toys Wednesday. The Hopkins, MN-based company, Healthy Legacy, joined forces with health groups around the country for the research.

Researchers tested over 1,500 popular children's toys for lead, cadmium, arsenic, chlorine/PVC and other chemicals. They found that one in three toys tested had medium or high chemicals of concern.

Twenty percent of the tested toys had traces of lead but some of the toys had lead levels above 600 parts per million.

Children's jewelry still remains the most contaminated product according to the research.

Bet this story will get very little play in the media.

18. We actually have a couple stores in downtown Portland
that are 'US made' toy stores. The toys are more expensive of course (personally I don't mind), but last year when I went in they were doing rocking business. They specifically market that their toys as an alternative to China made ones.

3. I walked down a toy isle the other day
I had not been in one for a while since the kids are now older. I needed a new board game and it was at the back on the toy department. As I was through, I could not believe the smell of plastic. It almost hurt my chest going through there. almost all the toys we made of plastic. If I can smell something that strong, it has to be giving off chemicals. I don't believe that any chemicals from a plastic product into the air can be very healthy.

4. At least in the old days we only had to deal with the lead paint
Now apparently lead is just a small part of the whole cocktail of poisons in our toys. Just lovely.

7. Thanks for the link
It is a shame that after all the good work they did, the only play in the media was a small local news station in MN.

8. One of the partner groups was in NY and they seem to have hit the NY newspapers
that's how I came across it. I think it was released today, so maybe it will be picked up in the news tonight and tomorrow. Too bad it wasn't before all that toy shopping that went on last weekend.

10. AP has a story now. Their headline: Group finds fewer toys with high lead levels
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5imITSXacTPT5LUZYscC_7g1bSl8wD94RANKG0

Not until the article re-emphasized this year fewer toys have lead did the article go on to say, well yeah one in three are still contaminated.

16. Shit, I'm going to be looking for something to buy my 2yo nephew for Xmas this weekend.
Edited on Thu Dec-04-08 08:55 AM by Odin2005
Now I'm gonna be scared to death that what I buy him is going to make him sick. This is SOOOO fucking WRONG on so many levels. :grr:

This is the disgusting end result of "free trade". Sorry Free-Traders but the health of my nephew is more important then your ideological sacred cows.

19. Here's a list to start from:
http://www.nmctoys.com/
http://treehousetoys.us/
http://www.stillmadeinusa.com/toysngames.html
http://www.mainemade.com/

Also, depending on where you live, I highly recommend taking a walk around downtown as that's how I found the local natural toy stores here. Then it's a two-fer as you support local business and get toys/gifts that you don't have to worry about!

20. I'm giving books from now on.
Even the newborns are getting 'em. Books are sometimes way down on the list of priorities for most parents these days.
