Omaha native may be prospective Labor nominee (would be the first openly gay cabinet secretary)

BY JOSEPH MORTON
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

WASHINGTON - Mary Beth Maxwell says her years of fighting for workers' rights can be traced to the values and sense of social justice that came with her upbringing in a Catholic family in Omaha.

"Who I am is a lot about Omaha itself," she said Wednesday in an interview.

Maxwell, 43, has received some high-profile mentions lately as a possible nominee for secretary of labor under President-elect Barack Obama. She would be the first openly gay cabinet secretary.

Prospective nominees typically remain tight-lipped until after the confirmation process is completed. In keeping with that tradition, Maxwell declined to discuss any cabinet speculation.

I applied right after Obama was elected. I guess I'm out.

3. ofcourse it does, this is something to celebrate
That is not something DU seem to be very good at currently, now the Warren issue on the other hand is something that can get their blood boiling and ergo topics regarding that skyrockets

4. I have outrage fatigue
Anger gives me horrible migraines. After eight years, any reason to be happy should be embraced.

7. KnR. In the meantime, hearts are once again wounded, this time by the minister Obama chose....
... for his inaugural invocation.

Gay activists furious with Obama

How is Obama ever going to get this right? That is a serious question. As far as I can tell, every time Obama makes a move the gay community jumps all over him and vows to never forgive him. Yet in my mind he's the only rational hope we Democrats have -- we Americans -- we people of any kind.

14. I have to agree with you, Hekate
Once again. :)

As far as I can tell, every time Obama makes a move the gay community jumps all over him and vows to never forgive him.

In addition to this story, there's also this one:

"Gay man backed for Navy secretary" http://washingtontimes.com/news/2008/dec/18/gay-man-backed-for-navy-secretary/

The fact that this man is even being considered and getting publicity for this position makes me fantastically happy. We have already seen more "progress" now than in the last 20+ years and Obama isn't even in office yet.

I'm not all that familiar with the pastor that has everyone so up in arms right now, but if I was gay and had to choose which issue meant more to me (proud homosexuals getting prominent positions, or some evangelical pastor reading a poem at the inauguration) I'd have to say that the first issue would carry SIGNIFICANTLY more weight in my mind. But that's just me...

23. If you were to read the threads, you would see that it is not only the gay community here. Plenty

of hetero posters here are unhappy about Warren. Ironically, someone comnplained on another thread that a number of us posted that we were hetero. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=3649640&mesg_id=3650543

Gay rights is not only a gay issue any more than minority rights or women's rights are only for minorities or woman. All people should care deeply that everyone has equal rights.

And, his anti-gay stance is not the only reason to object to Warren. He is also anti-separation of church and state, anti-Democrat, and anti-choice, as well as being anti-gay. I have less than no problem stating that Warren was a terrible choice. Saying Obama made a bad choice is very different from saying Obama is bad, though or from rejecting Obama. He is not perfect and he will get criticized, both justly and unjustly. You have to find a way to deal with that, but don't blame things on gay posters.

8. How do I kick?
Total noob. But I agree that Warren (though he is a mistake) lasts five minutes and this nomination would last for years and make a fine statement about inclusiveness. It deserves kicks and recs. And I have no idea how to do it. *sigh*

Feeling useless

The guy is only 43 years old. Senior citizens are not being fairly represented in the new administration.
