Bush shoe protester has been beaten, Iraqi judge says

Matthew Weaver, Mark Tran and agencies
guardian.co.uk, Friday 19 December 2008 10.14 GMT

The Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at George
Bush was beaten afterwards and had bruises on his
face, the investigating judge in the case said today,
as a senior cleric in Iran urged others to wage a
"shoe intifada" against the US.

The reporter, Muntazer al-Zaidi, had bruises on his
face and around his eyes, said the judge, Dhia
al-Kinani said.

Kinani said a complaint about Zaidi's treatment had
been filed on his behalf and court officials "will
watch the footage to identify those who have
beaten him ... He was beaten and we filed a case
for that. Zaidi did not raise a complaint and he
can drop this case if he wants to."

In the Iranian capital, Tehran, Ayatollah Ahmad
Jannati praised what he called the "shoe intifada"
at Friday prayers. Jannati proposed people in Iraq
and Iran carry shoes in further anti-American
demonstrations. "This should be a role model,"
he said.

1. Confirms what the BBC reported earlier. The judge is also probably saving his tail here too.
Picking sides right now I would probably side with the angry public too.

4. What do you think would have happened to him if
he had thrown his shoe at Saddam?

5. no - that is apples and grapes
what would happen if you threw shoes at Mugabe?

Why don't we go and invade Zimbabwe, then - depose Mugabe and take over and kill millions of the people in that country?

Then we can install a puppet regime and hire contractors and destroy infrastructure to our hearts content there.

see how your logic failed you?

9. I never said that I was in favor of invading Iraq
or Zimbabwe.

Or of beating a prisoner. I just don't like making a hero out of a guy because he threw shoes at someone is very smart. It is an assault plain and simple.

I just contrasted all this crap I keep hearing about Gitmo being the worst place in the world (tell that to Nick Berg as he was having his head sawed off). Tell that to folks in Saddam's tortue dungeons.

I am strongly in favor of pulling our military back to our hemisphere preferably within our own borders and not messing with other countries unless they attack us.

I really don't want to be dealing with these people. Let them kill each other. I just don't know how the set the clock back to before the invasion. Once we went into the country we asssumed certain responsibilities.

I feel two things will enhance our security. The first is energy independence, and the second is to no longer back stop Israel.

10. The U.S. was founded by shoe-throwers
The American Revolution was a shoe in the face to King George.

15. Yes you did. But you did so in a "plausible deniability" way.
Photons hit you and come out the other side unchanged.

18. At least with Saddam you knew what you were getting
He didn't try to masquerade as a democratic, freedom-loving, human rights defender.

We still do try to do that, even as we torture and go around invading other countries when we feel like it, whether anyone supports it or not.
