US: 14 students die in bombing at Afghan school
Source: AP

KABUL, Afghanistan – A suicide bomber tried to attack a meeting of tribal elders and blew himself up near an Afghan primary school on Sunday, killing 14 children and wounding 58 people, the U.S. military said.

The suicide blast went off near the entrance to a police and army post, said Yacoub Khan, the deputy police chief of the eastern province of Khost. U.S. troops are also stationed inside the outpost, but no troops were wounded or killed in the attack.

The U.S. military said that 16 people were killed, including 14 students, an Afghan soldier and another person, who was likely an Afghan security guard that Afghan officials said was killed.

Dr. Abdul Rahman, a doctor at a hospital near the blast, said the children were aged 8 to 10.

1. innocent kids dying. That is the horror of war:

..............The attack came on the last day of school for the year. Students had gathered in the classrooms to receive end-of-year certificates, Nang said.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the attack and called it "un-Islamic."

"Those who ordered and executed this attack cannot escape the revenge of Afghans and God's punishment," Karzai said in a statement.

A U.N. spokesman said the U.N. mission in Afghanistan was "appalled" at the suicide attack.

"The deaths of young children who were receiving their end-of-year education certificates are particularly galling," said Dan McNorton.

The blast in Khost province came only hours after a late-night rocket attack in Kabul on Saturday killed three teenage sisters. McNorton said that attack "also reminds us of the true impact this conflict has on those who play no part in it."

4. Not what the poster is saying
Just pointing out that when a militant does it, it's a bad thing, and totally unacceptable. When it's done by an organized military it's collateral damage and therefore acceptable.

The problem is that you have two groups using force to defend what they believe is right. And as far as I'm concerned neither is doing anything right.

6. Amazing how quick some are to defend killing women and children
The one element coloring our perception is *which* women and children are dying. If it's Palestinian women and children being murdered, it's obviously excusable because Israel is so wonderful and innocent.

7. well, if it's any consolation....
they were 'trying' to kill tribal elders....

A suicide car bomb in Afghanistan today killed 14 primary school children in what officials said was a failed attempt to blow up a meeting of tribal elders.

just saying

so, to keep pace with the thread direction ;)

the "counter logic" to justify the Israeli thread hijackers might be;

The useless random Hamas ineffective bottle rocket attacks aimed at 'military' targets in zionist territory does not justify the use of high altitude precision weapons as a counter measure !

yes ? no ?

9. When a terrorist deliberately targets innocents
It's a bad thing.

It's a bad thing when the military accidentally kills innocents, but here we have the issue of intent especially since we actively take measures to avoid such accidents. This is aside from the Muslim habit of hiding their military hardware among innocents.

11. Does that include the 2 children killed by Palestinian rocket fire?
Also, do you have any comment on the actual story itself?

What action do you think the world community ought to take in light of this attack in Afghanistan?

8. Children killed in Afghan attack
Source: BBC

A suicide bomber has hit a government building in eastern Afghanistan, killing 16 people, 14 of them children, local police said.

A doctor at a hospital in Khost said 58 people - many of them children - were hurt in the attack, close to a school.

Earlier, two Canadian soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in Panjwayi district, a Taleban stronghold in southern Kandahar province.

An Afghan interpreter and a policeman working with them were also killed.

"These soldiers died honourably, helping bring security to Afghanistan," said a spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) in a statement.
