Republicans Want Say in Economic Stimulus Plan
Source: NY Times

Congressional Republicans on Monday said they would work with Democrats to craft a plan to stimulate the economy, but only if GOP ideas are considered for a bill that could cost as much as $1 trillion.

''We need the right mix of tax relief and other measures to grow the economy,'' Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said in a statement. The Democrats' plan to pass a yet-unwritten stimulus bill before President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration next month gives Congress too little time to consider what's in it, he said.

''Taxpayers are in no mood to have a single dollar wasted, but it's not yet been explained how their tax dollars will be protected...in a rush to spend their money,'' McConnell added.

His comments and a simultaneous statement by House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio indicate that Republicans are emerging from their political fox hole with a traditional call for smaller government - even as many in the GOP ranks have joined Democrats in support of government rescues for the ailing financial sector.

11. I'll bet a buck two eighty we give it to them.
The scenario will be: Democratic stimulus bill passes House, dies in Senate on failed cloture vote. Democratic leadership considers playing hardball, can't find the rules for that game, and instead go and beg the Republican minority for their votes. Republican minority in Senate rewrites the stimulus package to remove things they don't like and add in their usual crap. Bill passes with only a handful of progressive Democrats voting against it.

I bet they block everything they decide to take a stand on and get away with it, from cabinet appointments and supreme court picks, to any legislation that tries to move away from Washington Consensus Neoliberalism.

32. You got it....
Of course if Nancy Pelosi had decided to put a lot of things on the table, a lot of Republicans wouldn't have remained in Congress. Of course is everything had been put on the table, she might not have remained in Congress either.

Bottom line is that we are on the Titanic. Ignore the fools on deck telling you to wait your turn for a lifeboat. Jump and swim as far away as possible so you don't get caught in the downcurrent when the ship finally sinks.

That's the scenario. But we no longer have Junior as president to threaten a veto if legislation doesn't suit him. I wonder how Obama will be in this respect. From what I've seen so far he'll probably be 'centrist' enough to let the Congressional minority write the bills.

13. We "considered" GOP ideas...
we consider them corrupt and self-serving.

John the Boner is out with his "traditional" call for smaller government? I didn't hear him calling for that while our current dictator created the Department of Fatherland Rights-Stomping and expanded our federal government to the largest and most expensive in the history of the USA. I say part of the stimulus package comes directly from the savings of all people with an (R) next their name.

Edited on Mon Dec-29-08 07:05 PM by KCabotDullesMarxIII
these gentlemen, who appear to be endowed with a most un-Republican common sense and decency.

In tonight's Edinburgh Evening News the following brief letter by an Alex Orr, appeared.

"Given the recent research that indicates orangutans help each other get food by trading tokens of different values, but only if help goes in both directions, it is they who should maybe be put in charge of the international banking system."

Well, promised adequate bonuses and golden parachutes, might they not also be co-opted to decide the most propitious ways in which the money should be allotted, to boost the economy. I don't think they would do it for peanuts. They seem to have a better grasp of appropriate remuneration than our Brightest and Best. (Oh, by the way, the headline was: "Orangutans should take on finances.")

I expect they'd go through the Fed and the Treasury like the wrath of God. I daren't even think what they'd do to the maestros of Goldman Sachs.

41. They should have "a say" in putting the plan together...or at least....
..be able to provide ideas. We know it's going to be all tipped toward CEO's, corporate exec's, Wall Street, and all the other big business interests....but let them share their ideas. Who knows...they "might" have something interesting to hear.

But F*CK them when it comes down to the wire. They now enjoy their 41 to 59 Congress, and it's THEIR own doing that got them there. There ideas are mostly dead and responsible for the f*cking mess we are in today.

So, hear them out...then make a deal that you can get your 60+ votes on to get this country back on track.

We KNOW boner and mcconnel aren't going to like it...no matter what it comes down to. So, f*ck them. But work a bill together...don't spend an inordinate amount of time on it from their perspective...and get us out of THEIR MESS of shit!

49. Notice: 8 trillion so far to the banks is 'fine' with GOP, but not for Main Street.
We will see the effect of not winning Congress after Jan 20.

And we will see the continuing effect of a total lack of
Congressional leadership in Pelosi/Reid.

The war on the working class will continue, and if the past is
any hint of the future, the GOP will win this, and Pelosi and
Reid will help them do it.

Then, Democrats will use this to say 'well we have to win in 2010
also,' while they sit on their hands for four years, just as we
saw happen after Nov. 2006---the Dems did zero, and enabled
BushCo, and used that 'have you had enough? vote Democratic
in 2008' as the carrot.

We're being gamed by Democrats, and the next 90 days will show
this very clearly.

will NOT offer much to any decision, so let's not
waste anymore time. Surely their "solutions" of
the past eight years and the twelve years of the Reagan

The time has come to pay a lot more attention to what is

63. Are they going to say anything different than they have for the last 8
years? how about the 12 years of Raygun and bush? If they don't have anything new to say, we should say 'thanks, but no thanks to that bridge to economic ruin'. What could they possibly say now, that they haven't already said? The American people have said loud and clear the CONs are failures. This is truly a group that needs to sit down, STFU and learn something for a change.

They have brought us to brink of collapse. Democracy is fragile and they know it. They have created conditions for revolution; poor economy and high unemployment. No more. We are in a fight to save ourselves and our Constitution. They are lucky not to be in prison. The New Deal saved us ruin from once before. I hope a Newer Deal will do the same, but that won't happen if CONs have any say in economic recovery. They shouldn't call too much attention to themselves right now. The country supports Obama and if they push too hard... Well I don't recommend wearing Prada shoes to the unemployment line!!!!!!!!!!!
