China faces new melamine scandal
Source: Reuters

More than 1,500 boxes of Chinese biscuits exported to Hong Kong and Singapore have tested positive for melamine as suspects in the protracted tainted-food scandal go on trial in China, local media reported on Tuesday.

The scandal has battered faith in Chinese-made products after a series of food- and product-safety scares and led to recalls of Chinese-made dairy products around the world. At least six babies died after drinking contaminated formula in China and hundreds of thousands fell ill.

Melamine is an industrial compound used in making plastic chairs, among other things, and is added to food to cheat nutrition tests.

Quality inspectors in Dongguan in the southern province of Guangdong found the latest contaminated biscuits after examining 13 batches of 4,800 boxes for export after neighbouring Hong Kong, a "special administrative region" of China, and Singapore reported tainted samples, the China News Service said.

8. They won't learn until world governments start refusing to import their crap....

But that would mean re-opening our own old factories and rehiring the laid-off Americans, and what multi-national corporation CEO would want to do that and have to put up with all those onerous regulations from OSHA, FDA, USDA and the Dept of Labor?

:eyes:

Maybe next year.

10. Well, Duh.
Everytime I hear about yet another scare regarding this stuff, I wonder if there's something in the water that erases memory cells... Stop importing anything from China. Period. But, unfortunately, they could bankrupt us. Oh, wait a minute... :eyes:

14. Not at this rate.
I'm guessing that the billions we owe China through debt, will be forgiven if Congress steps in to protect China from all the lawsuits that will eventually crop up because of this.

9. After the last couple of years
You'd have to be crazy to deliberately purchase food items for your family or pets that come from China.

I very rarely eat any prepackaged foods but I scour the labels and have even contacted the manufacturer for my dog's food and treats to make sure I know the source.

sitting under house arrest in a 10 million dollar Manhattan penthouse somehow doesn't seem appropriate punishment for someone who stole 50 billion dollars.

edit: this should be in response to the article about the dairy execs facing the death penalty in China. sorry.
