CLINTONS TO PUSH BUTTON ON TIMES SQUARE BALL
Source: New York Post

Bill and Hillary Clinton will push the ceremonial button to signal the lowering of the giant illuminated ball in New York's Times Square this New Year.

The former president and his wife -- a U.S. senator from New York and President-elect Barack Obama's choice for Secretary of State -- will join New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in this year's festivities, event organizers said in a statement Tuesday.

12. So a beloved former Democratic President and a Sitting Democratic Senator and soon to be SoS...
...is the equivalent or less than Britney Spears?

Ok...

Here is the "ridiculous celebrity" that pushed the button to drop the ball last year:

Iraq war veteran Karolina Wierzchowska, who was also a Ground Zero guard worker and a New York Police Academy valedictorian.

The year before: Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Liliana G. Perez, assigned as a K-9 handler at Naval Weapons Station Earle, N.J., and Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class Oswaldo San Andres, assigned to the Navy Operational Support Center Amityville, N.Y., were chosen to represent the Navy during the New Year’s festivities.

In 2004, it was COlin Powell -- I hear his dance moves are fantastic.

And if you go back it time,to 1998, you get this tabloid senation: Sang Lan, the Chinese gymnast given little chance of walking again after landing head-first on a mat while practicing a vault at the Goodwill Games in July.

In 2000, it was Muhammed Ali, and we all know he is every bit as fluffy a personality as Britney.

But the most egregious of all was 1999, when pure empty headed celebrity sensation Dr. Mary Ann Hopkins from Doctor's Without Borders was chosen to push the button for the ball drop.

Yep, you got it nailed.

on edit -- I left one out -- the first invited guest to push the button to drop the ball in Times Square: Oseola McCarty. Just another ridiculous celebrity. You can read about her here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oseola_McCarty

46. Well, I'm wrong then. But to me it's still a ridiculous 'ceremony.' If anything, it turns important
people and things into just another entertainment event.

4. Unbelievable........
After she so quickly gave the finger to NY voters when she was offered the S of S job?

After she did absolutely nothing as a Senator her whole term in office - yeah, that's right, name me one significant piece of legislation that bears her name.

After she spent the last two years running for the nomination?

And they're gonna flip the switch?

I take it Eliot Spitzer was unavailable.

17. I suspect she is, yes,
but having been named Secretary of State will, I'm sure, ease her pain. She's got to be smarting after writing off that 13.1 million bucks she lent her campaign - you know, the one that was so badly managed.

For a carpetbagger, she certainly exploited the citizens of NY, who were awfully good to her.

Let's hope 2009 is a better one for Mrs. Clinton.

31. He was a carpetbagger, too........
I, and a whole lot of other people, were incensed about this when he did it. Shameless, but he pulled it off.

And even then, everyone knew it was only to serve as his launching pad for the Presidential run I wish he'd never made.

Hillary did the exact same thing. To me, she's just as shameless as RFK was.

32. Welcome to DU,
and thank you for your concern, but, honestly, I'm having a very nice life, and I hope you are, too. I don't know where you got "bitter" from anything I posted, but there is such a thing as projection, and you seem to have fallen prey to it.

Sometimes, those cold, hard facts can be hard to face. I know you'll handle it all well.

I'm happy. Our man won.

Now, be happy, too, and enjoy your time at DU.

35. Running for the nomination for two years is reason to hate her?
Didn't Obama do that, too?

The Clinton hate can get so old and tired on DU and very frequently it also can defy all logic.

They are pushing a button to make a ball drop on NYE. Who cares?

37. Where did you get "hate" from my post?
I don't hate Hillary Clinton.

You've got some serious problems if you inferred hatred from what I wrote.

<shudder>

Creepy. And, I might add, defensive as all get out. Looking for a fight where there is none. It's astonishing that an opinion can bring this out in you.

Best of luck in your universe.
