Obama to host Commander-in-Chief's Ball
Source: CNN

President-elect Barack Obama is set to host the Commander-in-Chief's inaugural ball, an event that honors the country's active duty and reserve military.

It's a tradition that started in 2005 by President Bush, according to the Presidential Inaugural Committee. Invited guests will include Purple Heart recipients, families of fallen heroes, and spouses of deployed military, the committee said.

The ball is set to be held at the National Building Museum on January 20.

1. I have to say, the Inaugural season always gives one an excuse to make cheesy jokes about
Presidential Balls....and how they have a lot of them, and so forth...

20. Ironic that it started after his party diminished and mocked the purple heart medal at their
convention just 5 months earlier. Apparently, he did not think 3 purple hearts given by the Navy meant anything and that it was perfectly ok for his audience to mock them with their bandaids. It still surprises and disappoints me that NOT ONE speaker at that convention spoke against them.

obama in, bush out! yay!

and, yeah, this is a tradition after one president? how does that work? maybe they should let it die, though. Bush's "traditions" have contributed to him being the Worst President EVER: http://tv1.com/playlists/105

10. I live here, near DC,
and, honestly, I don't really follow this stuff, but if it were begun by Chimpy Fucknuts, it's tainted. End it now, let it disappear. Nothing he did has anything but the smell of deceit on it.

Welcome to DU, by the way............

11. It's my understanding
that the festivities like these balls are paid for with private funds. No taxpayer money.

I hope that makes you feel better. After all, we have a lot to celebrate, and only one day on which to do it.

Happy New Year.

13. I'd feel better if even a 4th of the money slated by any entity were
donated to food banks, foreclosures, the homeless centers, New Orleans, services for Vets, etc.

Its excessive for Washington, and yes Obama too, to celebrate with countless balls while Americans are suffering the way in which they are and have been for 8 frickin' years. The vast majority of Americans will celebrate this victory just fine without all of the trappings of times past that simply assert that nothing has changed.

When are we going to wake up and smell the coffee?

15. I disagree
Austerity certainly has its place, but so does massive celebration and a grand tradition that's fun for a lot of people, that's wonderful for a lot of people to observe, that doesn't harm anyone is, in my world, a good thing.

None of that money would ever go to the places you mentioned. That's just a fact of life. Do you honestly think it was otherwise? I'd say you might well wake up and smell the coffee.

It's regrettable that you can't enjoy the celebration. We certainly do have enough to lament, but, for one day and one night, we can rejoice and be happy.

Some of us are doing the best we can to start fixing it. It is not, you might be surprised to learn, a zero-sum deal.

21. "... personally...."
Not one word of that post was personal. Now, this next sentence might be interpreted as personal, if you were egocentric enough, but if one sees a personal address in words that are dispassionate and focused, then one might have an agenda that isn't entirely sound.

Naw, I'm not gonna write that sentence. And I do forgive you for your lapse.

Enjoy January 20, 2009. We have so much to celebrate.

16. Can't he hire someone ELSE to host it?
I mean, putting all those little hot dogs on toothpicks and getting the lime sherbet and 7-Up for the punch is a nice gesture, but a little beneath the Commander-in-Chief. Although it might give him a chance to schmooze with the military.

And who's going to be baby-sitting the kids while he hosts? He's got to hire a nanny. Maybe Fran Drescher will be available. Why isn't SHE doing the serving and the cooking of horse dovers?

22. The bastards will just disrespect him somehow
Greet him with silence? Turn their backs on him? I wouldn't put it past these conservatard military types to throw shoes at Obama.

They ACT like they're fighting for our "rights", but they sure like to support politicians who do all in their power to take away our rights, and wipe their asses on the Constitution.

Yeah, I know there are some Dems in the military. But far, far too few.

27. So, you hate Obama? And it sounds like you hate the troops.
Mayhaps you should find somewhere else to hang out.

Either that, or take a deep breath and realize that just because Obama doesn't meet your particular standards doesn't mean he's worthy of your hatred.

Perhaps YOU should hang out elsewhere, like over at a Freeper site where blind obedience to the President is the rule.
