Cheney says no one saw financial crisis coming
Source: New Press

WASHINGTON (AP) - Vice President Dick Cheney says that his boss, President George W. Bush, has no need to apologize to the American people for not doing more to head off the financial calamity, saying no one saw the crisis coming.

During an interview Thursday with The Associated Press in his West Wing office, Cheney defended the administration's performance on an economy that is growing weaker daily and which recently collapsed in spectacular fashion. Cheney said that ''nobody anywhere was smart enough to figure it out.''

He said Bush doesn't need to apologize because he has taken ''bold, aggressive action.''

Note; article ends with that.

44. It has always been about a money grab for them from the start. If
they didn't see it coming they are guilty and if they did see it coming and obviously did nothing about it they are guilty. It is a lose/lose situation for them either way. Cheney has such arrogance. They didn't care about America, they had not interest in governing. They just wait for the democrats to clean up and leave a surplus and then they all rush in to take the money. Nice ideology.

who saw this coming and thus bet against the market and made billions in the process.

Paulson's firm alone went from $12 Billion in assets in June 2007 to $36 Billion in November 2008.

Three very-smart individuals, Paulson, George Soros, and James Simons earned a combined $9.4 Billion last year from shorting several sectors of the economy (mortgage-backed securities and commodities)

30. The rank and file regulators saw it. . .
and when they told they superiors, it basically went nowhere. They knew years ago and it was dismissed. How do I know? Let's say I have "friends" that are rank and file regulators (banking and non-banking) and "they" were all talking about it years ago. Yes, the comparison to 9/11 is true -- "upper echelon" didn't foresee it because THEY had blinders and were told to look in another, 'more pression' direction.

"This bill will also, in my judgment, raise the likelihood of future massive taxpayer bailouts. It will fuel the consolidation and mergers in the banking and financial services industry at the expense of customers, farm businesses, family farmers, and others, and in some instances I think it inappropriately limits the ability of the banking and thrift institution regulators from monitoring activities between such institutions and their insurance or securities affiliates and subsidiaries raising significant safety and soundness consumer protection concerns."

50. Professor Nuriel Roubini, Gillian Tett of the Finanical Times
Roubini, who began making dire predictions about a U.S. economic collapse back when Americans were still busy flipping condos and doing cash-out refis, has become the oracle of the financial crisis. As early as mid-2006, on his well-read blog and in speeches, he explained why the bursting housing bubble would drive an unusually severe recession. He predicted mortgage defaults would cause financial institutions to fail, and that soaring oil prices, combined with falling home prices, would cause debt-ridden consumers to dramatically cut spending. At the time, most economists were predicting a "soft landing," and even those forecasting a housing downturn didn't foresee its deep impact on the financial system. Today Roubini scoffs at their optimism. "(My view) was so obvious, I don't know how anyone could argue otherwise," he says.

http://www.newsweek.com/id/176339

Another warning voice was that of Gillian Tett, the FT's award-winning capital markets editor. For more than two years Tett, who has a PhD in social anthropology, had pointed to the risks in the sophisticated debt instruments known as credit derivatives. In September 2007, well before before the collapse of Lehman Brothers, Tett identified the heart of the problem. "Although it has been taken as self-evident in recent years that the financial system grows stronger if banks spread their credit risks, some are starting to refine that view... Bankers had become adept at removing credit risk from banks' balance sheets, either by selling the loan directly to outside investors or, more usually, by turning loans into new securities such as bonds and then selling them on the capital markets."

52. No one could have imagined the terrorists might fly planes into
buildings.

No one could have imagined that the levees in New Orleans wouldn't hold.

No one could have imagined that Obama bin Laden and Al Quaeda were "determined to strike within the United States."

No one could have imagined that Saddam didn't have WMDs.

No one could have imagined that the Iraq War would turn into a quagmire that would cost gsums of money and many US and Iraqi deaths.

Except, of course, that all those things were said over and over again by the people who are still considered to be "left-wing whackos," while all those people who couldn't have imagined such things are still the ones who are given unlimited airtime to spew their nonsense, while those who got everything right are still completely marginalized by the "serious" people in Washington and in the media.

65. That's because this financial crisis was planned, and carried
out without any transparency.

70. Bushco is scum on slime, BUT where the hell was Congress, Pub or Dem? Worrying about
some woman's right to die, if they were Pub and steroids in baseball if they were Dem. Taxpayers deserve better. How do we get it?

72. Give me a break. Anybody with a passing interest in the economy saw it coming.
The same people also know that it's no accident. This was engineered.

I can't stand how arrogant this man is, I really hope he chokes on his own bile.

This man's comments or spewing in the last couple of weeks should have landed in prison, such disrespect for the American people. I really hope he chokes on all that arrogance.

77. This reminds me of the Nova program from the other night re: Jason and the Argonauts,
Edited on Fri Jan-09-09 11:57 AM by Uncle Joe
after being captured by the one-eyed giant Cyclops.

The Cyclops asks Jason his name, and Jason replies with the Greek version of the word "nobody."

After getting the Cyclops drunk on wine, causing him to fall asleep, Jason and his crew use a spear to stab the Cyclops in the eye. The Cyclops wakes up screaming. The other giants alarmed by the commotion yell out, who is attacking you? and the Cyclops answers "Nobody!"

Jason and his men proceed to escape.

This is the Cheney/Bush answer to all that has plagued their corrupt, incompetent, maladministration, no one has been in charge, so no one can be held accountable.

79. Oh, please. These people have been busy looting the Treasury since they were
they were installed in 2000; the bailout of the banking industry was their last heist. They knew damn well what they were doing.

This is one hell of a flaming example of the complete and utter failure of republican economic policies. We had 8 years of their economic policies and, as a result, are on the brink of financial ruin clearly illustrating their trickle down approach is a bunch of bull.
