Few in U.S. See Jazeera’s Coverage of Gaza War.
Source: NYTimes

'In a conflict where the Western news media have been largely prevented from reporting from Gaza because of restrictions imposed by the Israeli military, Al Jazeera has had a distinct advantage. It was already there.

There are six reporters in Gaza, two working for Al Jazeera English and four working for the much larger and more popular Arabic version of the network, which was created in 1996 with a $150 million grant from the emir of Qatar, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani. Al Jazeera describes itself on the air as “the only international broadcaster with a presence there.”

While getting to the story has not been an insurmountable problem for Al Jazeera English’s journalists — they are, in effect, surrounded by it — getting their reports to the English-speaking public has been a bit trickier. The network is largely unavailable in the United States, carried only by cable providers in Burlington, Vt.; Toledo, Ohio; and Washington, D.C. (In Burlington, the local government last summer rejected public calls for the city-owned cable provider, Burlington Telecom, to drop the channel.). . .

Al Jazeera planned to announce this week that all its video material of the war in Gaza would become available under the most lenient Creative Commons license, which basically means it can be used by anyone — rival broadcaster, documentary maker or individual blogger, for example — as long as Al Jazeera is credited. Also, it currently streams its broadcasts in a variety of formats and has a dedicated channel on YouTube with more than 6,800 videos.

Al Jazeera said that since the war started the number of people watching its broadcasts via the Livestream service has increased by over 500 percent, and the views of videos on its YouTube channel have increased by more than 150 percent. Also, Al Jazeera has created a Twitter feed on the “war on Gaza,” which provides frequent short messages that refer the public to new material that can be viewed online.' >>>

1. Al Jazeera's coverage was really good.
The online stream started to fail day-before-yesterday. Haven't been able to get it since.

2. I'd like to see a major US media outlet force its way into Gaza in defiance of Israel's restrictions
Edited on Mon Jan-12-09 03:46 AM by DRoseDARs
What is Israel going to do if they try crossing the border, open fire on and kill US citizens?

3. The IDF has murdered European journalists in Gaza in the past
eg http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/6614817.stm

So I can understand that US journalists would be hesitant about marching in.

Gaza: Two Journalists Killed in Renewed Palestinian Clashes

Two Journalists Murdered

Two journalists were killed in a shooting attack on Sunday night, during clashes between Fatah and Hamas in Gaza.

Barhoum expressed his sadness "for the death of another employee at Falastine newspaper Mohammad 'Abdo, who was shot at by member of the president's guards. He was with the journalist, Sleiman Al-Ashi, who was killed instantly, 'Abdo was critically injured in the shooting and died on Monday morning when he succumbed to his wounds."

6. LOL...
Edited on Mon Jan-12-09 04:58 AM by jordi_fanclub
Have you read ALL the article you provided in YOUR link?!?!

Because it describes two SEPARATE incidents (with 2+2 victims):
- one NOT related with journalists (where 2 victims are members of the Fatah)
- another, reporting the murder of 2 journalists (this ones members of the Hamas)

So, probably:
- you are confused,
OR
- your headline is misleading.

7. Yeah, real funny.
Edited on Mon Jan-12-09 05:30 AM by Behind the Aegis
I read it. I understood it. Did you? The battle was between Hamas and Fatah. Fatah was blamed, but the violence was between the two Palestinian factions. BTW, the reporters were not noted as members of Hamas but reporting for a pro-Hamas paper. So, reporters can expect violence from any one in Gaza.

On edit: Yes, I shouldn't have said "Hamas." I should have said "non-Israeli."

8. War criminals
Both sides are lead by war criminals. They should all be arrested and tried. I am pretty convinced that if all the evidence is presented, and international law carried out, they would be convicted, and the political leadership of Gaza and Israel would spend the rest of their lives in prison cells. We used to hang war criminals. Me, I have no problem with the concept.

Working out a just peace is not optional. Both sides need to get that rather quickly. The rest of us are really getting tired of their crap.

Israel overreacts. World condemns Israel. X attacks Israel. Israel overreacts. World condemns Israel. X attacks Israel. Israel overreacts. World condemns Israel.

Keep this handy post to cut and paste after this latest round of violence and bloodshed results in another round of renewed talks to form a lasting peace which sadly will end with... well, you know the drill...

I also love their left-leaning documentary series... such as People and Power.

24. Link to Al Jazeera's home page
http://english.aljazeera.net/

You need to read web sites from around the world in order to get a balanced picture of what is going on.

Otherwise, you get propaganda from only one point of view.

Even sites which are careful to be factual have a point of view because of the stories that they select to publish.

And not carrying Al Jazeera is just one instance of the failure of cable companies to provide real news.
