Bank of Clark County (WA) fails
Source: The Columbian

The Bank of Clark County was taken over by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp at the close of business on Friday, making it the first locally based bank to fail and the second that serves this community after Washington Mutual.

It will open on Tuesday as Umpqua Bank, which is taking over its insured deposits.

...

As of Jan.13, 2009, Bank of Clark County had total assets of $446.5 million and total deposits of $366.5 million. At the time of closing, there were approximately $39.3 million in uninsured deposits held in approximately 138 accounts that potentially exceeded the insurance limits. This amount is an estimate that is likely to change once the FDIC obtains additional information from these customers.

Umpqua will not assume the approximately $117.8 million in brokered deposits. The FDIC will pay the brokers directly for the amount of their insured funds.

1. Many of WA's credit Unions are weathering well so far
I would suggest for those potentially affected to look into them.

We're Still Making Loans
posted Nov 18, 2008

I always appreciate hearing from BECU members. Whether a member has a compliment or a concern, I learn something every time. What I've learned lately is that many of you are wondering if BECU is still lending. In a word: Absolutely.

First and foremost, we believe home ownership is not only rewarding, it provides members more financial security and peace of mind. That's why we offer a comprehensive range of sensible and straightforward home loan options to suit most everyone's needs. We lend to first-time home buyers, experienced home buyers and those ready to buy a dream or vacation home, at highly competitive rates with no hidden fees. After all, our goal is not only to help make members homeowners, but to keep them homeowners for as long as they wish.

We've always maintained sound lending practices, which keeps us well-capitalized. We continue making loans to members with the same great rates, low costs, without tricks or hidden fees. Whether you need to buy a car, a home or make home improvements, we've got a solution for you. Indeed, at a time when mortgage losses have forced many lenders to scale back or even close their doors, we've lent over a billion dollars to our members in first mortgage home loans this year alone. And another $4.7 billion in other consumer loans including credit cards, lines of credit and home equity loans.

Our not-for-profit cooperative model provides a continued source of stability and strength to weather this financial storm with our members. We've seen slightly greater default rates – similar to previous periods of economic distress – but nothing out of the ordinary for tough times. But because we're a credit union, we have – and always have had – a prudent approach to lending. So, if you need funds to buy a car, do some remodeling, buy a home or to help you better manage your finances, talk to us at BECU, we're here for you.

In closing, we've never been about profit or stockholders. We're about you, our members. We have the money to lend—safely, responsibly and honestly. And given our strength, history and philosophy, we optimistically look to the future.

Sincerely,
Joe Brancucci
Executive Vice President, BECU

I heart my bank!

9. We're here while my son attends college
He's in running start and attending WCC right now, and we're hoping to transfer him to WWU in the near future. Great city for education, I'm glad we moved here.

13. Running Start is one of the best programs available
Makes AP classes no longer necessary, and you get 2 years of free college education. My wife and i both did that and never regretted it.

The downside is that the teachers at WCC are generally much more approachable than WWU teachers, which might give kids an unrealistic expectation of the last 2 years... or provide a good transition from high school to college. Can't make up my mind on that one.

5. WECU has the BEST customer service.
When Cascade Natural Gas cut my service because they said I hadn't payed them, even though I had paid via WECU's billpay system a week earlier, the person I talked to actually called CNG and faxed them proof that I paid including the check number.

CNG didn't care and refused to turn my gas back on without paying $60, but I resolved that through other channels (CNG corporate).

10. It's good to hear this...
I'm very pleased with them. It's good to hear other happy stories about a financial institution instead of the blue-streak swearing that gets associated with many of the large banks.

I like the fact that when I call and there's a human on the line within a very short period of time.

14. I also moved my car loan from BOA to WECU last year.
They beat BOA's rate even.

7. Yep, they're good. Always had the best rates on CDs as well, until just this year
Group Health Credit Union is beating them out now.

8. About a month before all this started I switched my acct to a local credit union.
I too think this is the best idea for just about anybody, of course depending on the credit union. My acct was with Bank of America before I switched, and I had been disappointed with their service in several instances. My criticisms of the bank were several:

(1) There were several instances of what seemed to me to be incompetence (no big deal in each case but annoying to have to call and take care of)
(2) Their special fees and the costs of little things like check books seemed to me more than would be called for in a bank truly concerned about its depositors.
(3) It was hard to talk to somebody on the phone.

I might be proven wrong, but I would whole-heartedly recommend credit unions for anybody rather than for-profit institutions like BOA, which are always looking for ways to make a killing, often at their depositors expense.
