BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Three U.S. soldiers were killed Saturday while guarding a children's hospital in the town of Baquba, north of Baghdad, after a hand grenade was thrown at them from a nearby building.
The latest incident brings to 161 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in combat in Iraq since the war began in March.
U.S. officials had hoped that the deaths Tuesday of Odai and Qusai Hussein -- two of the most feared and powerful figures in their father's regime -- would help quell an insurgency that has been whittling away at U.S. forces, but at least eight U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq since U.S. troops raided a home in an affluent neighborhood of the northern city of Mosul, killing Odai, 39, and Qusai, 37, in a barrage of machine gun and rocket fire.
At least 47 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq since President Bush declared major combat operations over May 1.
