'Lost in Space' actor Bob May dies at 69 in Calif.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bob May, who donned The Robot's suit in the hit 1960s television show "Lost in Space," has died. He was 69.

May died Sunday of congestive heart failure at a hospital in Lancaster, said his daughter, Deborah May.

He was a veteran actor and stuntman who had appeared in movies, TV shows and on the vaudeville stage when he was tapped by "Lost in Space" creator Irwin Allen to play the Robinson family's loyal metal sidekick in the series that debuted in 1965.

"He always said he got the job because he fit in the robot suit," said June Lockhart, who played family matriarch Maureen Robinson. "It was one of those wonderful Hollywood stories. He just happened to be on the studio lot when someone saw him and sent him to see Irwin Allen about the part. Allen said, 'If you can fit in the suit, you've got the job.'"

Although May didn't provide the robot's distinctive voice (that was done by announcer Dick Tufeld), he developed a following of fans who sought him out at memorabilia shows.

2. Danger! Will Robinson

The next decade or so is going to suck as people who were my childhood shuffle off their mortal coils.

Other than some of the clunky (pun intended) dialog... the Space Family Robinson's robot was better than either C-3PO or R2D2.

4. Tell me about it!
Was watching STTMP on DVD with granddaughter. She's quite the budding Trekster, oh, yes. It hit me...since it came out, we've lost Dee, Jimmy, Gino, Maj and Persis. And yes, Guy, Jonathan and now Bob, who we never saw, but did put some life into that clever character.

I miss them all.

8. The trade-off is that you'll probably get to see people like James Dobson make the journey to Hell.

3. "It does not compute"
became a catch-phrase of the day, and still is used occasionally today.

9. At least we still have Will!!!
How had is it on Billy Mummy, he's the last one.
All his co-stars are dead, save one of teh girls I believe.

FWIW Billy Mummy's career includes:
Fish Heads
Lenier on Babylon 5
many other things I can't remember :)

His career was more or less ruined as a talented child star. Which may be good since he's a decent Adult.
he has a great sense of humor about himself, and regularly attends sci-fi conventions as a fan.

This is off the top of my head, so I know i'm missing a bunch of his career.

My friend has run into him at conventions a couple times, and says he's "just zis guy, ya know?"

RIP Bob. Thank you for bringing a robot to life.

11. Angela Cartwright is still alive, isn't she?
She was one of my childhood favorites. And I think (memory fuzzy here) she was on the Danny Thomas show (Make Room for Daddy?) even before LIS.

14. I named my daughter " Angela" after Angela Cartwright.
I remember watching "Make Room for Daddy" when I was a little girl. I thought the name Angela was so pretty. That was the only name I ever wanted for my one and only little girl (My little girl is 36 yrs old now)
Oh well she's still her Dad's and mine baby girl (also she was born on her Daddy's birthday) She is definitely a gift from God to us

17. Interesting Bill Mumy story
Bill appeared as the nefarious little kid in the Twilight Zone episode "It's a Good Life." He played a child with destructive powers, so everyone had to agree with him or he'd mete out severe twisted punishment.

In the second revival of The Twilight Zone, forty years later, he played in "It's Still a Good Life." Bill played the now-grown-up kid, and he had a daughter with the same tyrannical powers. The daughter was played by Bill's real-life daughter, and Bill's mother from the original episode, Chloris Leachman, came back as Bill's mother in the remake.

I used to think Mumy was pronounced Myoumee, but it's actually Moo-me.
