Editorials worldwide pillory Bush one final time
Source: Reuters

BERLIN (Reuters) - Editorial writers around the world have been taking their final printed whacks at George W. Bush, accusing the president of tarnishing America's standing with what many saw as arrogant and incompetent leadership.

Some newspaper editorials, for all their criticism, suggested historians might just be kinder later on than those now writing first drafts of history. A success often cited by those seeking a silver lining was the United States' freedom from further homeland attacks following Sept.11.

Bush's successor, Barack Obama, will be sworn in as the 44th U.S. president Tuesday.

"A weak leader, Bush was just overwhelmed in the job," said Germany's Sueddeutsche Zeitung under a headline: "The Failure." "He confused stubbornness with principles. America has become intolerant and it will take a long time to repair that damage."

I'm so sick of hearing how Bush kept us safe after 9/11. It happened on HIS watch. A little detail everybody keeps forgetting.

1. You're right. AND, that is the point that we have to keep.............
.........pounding on to get and keep that point out there over the coming years. Let him be "remembered" for that, and NOT for trying to prove something cannot be proved or disproved.

That line is the most disgusting phrase in recent memory.

He has ruined - RUINED - everything that America stands for.

19. He also kept us safe from the corruption that might have occurred in fixing up New Orleans' levees
before Katrina hit. Why, there might have been a million dollars lost to bribery and corruption had those levees been repaired and made strong enough to withstand hurricanes. And a million dollars, that's a lot of money. It's almost .000143% of the financial sector bailout. So we have to thank George Bush's unwavering stance against New Orleans-style corruption that we had that .000143% available. Without it, the financial companies would have had to make do with only 699.999 billion dollars.

broke treaties, lied, made enemies, scoffed/denied warming, allowed the largest theft and downturn, stole hope. While making him a bigger fool and Cheney and Rove bigger liars.

THey ruined America. They did NOTHING good.

It was intentional.

18. How sad...
...that a President can be SOOO despised. How must it fell to know that millions of people can't wait to see you go and won't miss you at all. I saw a group of Pro-Bush demostrators the other day, thanking Bush for keeping us safe. I was thinking, sure, he kept us safe. It would've been nice if he didn;t let everything else fall apart in the process!! I am SOOOO happy that I can feel good about the leader of the free world again...

21. More Americans died from terrorist attacks during the Bush administration
than during any other presidential administration. You can add "on American soil" if you want to. But without it, it also includes terrorist attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan.

BTW, if you add the American death tolls of 9/11 and Iraq, the total is still smaller than the toll of Hurricane Katrina.

32. Re-framing "no attacks since 9/11"
"Kept us safe since 9/11"? A more accurate and realistic way of looking at it is this:
For a period of sixty years, during the terms of 11 presidents, there was not a significant successful attack on American soil until the Bush administration utterly failed on 9/11.

society, its institutions, its Constitution, its rule of law, its environment, its economy, its jobs market, its standard of living, its currency, its public health, its standing in the world and its moral authority have all been weakened, many probably beyond repair. :P

He kept us safe AFTER we were attacked, lost 2 skyscrapers and 3000 people! I'm supposed to be impressed by that? I'm supposed to overlook a huge failure simply because he only allowed it to happen once? :eyes:

he pointedly ignored specific warning about it (the Aug. 6 presidential briefing) because he didn't want to be bothered with actual work while on his virtually nonstop vacation.

He dismissed the briefing with a flippant, smug, "OK, you've covered your ass now. You can leave."

Whenever the apologists repeat that ridiculous "He kept us safe from further terrorist attacks," people need to be constantly and firmly reminded of his response just one month before the 9/11 attacks to the warning in that briefing.
