Records show plane suffered previous malfunction

WASHINGTON – The US Airways jet that made a dramatic emergency landing on New York's Hudson River last week experienced an engine compressor failure two days earlier, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.

NTSB spokesman Peter Knudson said Monday that the board's examination of the Airbus 320's maintenance records show "there was an entry in the aircraft's maintenance log that indicates a compressor stall occurred on Jan. 13." The compressor, or fan, draws air into the engine.

He said the flight had a different pilot that day, and the board planned to interview that pilot to learn more about the incident.

NTSB investigators so far have not uncovered "any anomalies or malfunctions with Flight 1549 from the time it left the gate at LaGuardia Airport on Jan. 15 to the point the pilot reported a bird strike and loss of engine power," Knudson said. Pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger was able to glide to plane to an emergency river landing and there were no fatalities.

1. I assume you have a point when you say
"Uh huh... looks like the truth is slowly coming out..."

Could you please share just what it might be?

2. As an investigation proceeds, you come closer to the truth
That's the point of an investigation. It is often a slow process, though.

Perhaps that's all the poster means.

4. Could you explain what you mean by "truth"? Are we starting
another conspiracy theory this fast?

5. Christ, I hope not...
As Sigmund Freud once said, "sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar."

In this case, the plane went down because of impacts with terrorist geese from Canada, not because of two-day-previous compressor stalls.

6. It means that the bird strike may just be a convenient excuse for USAir to
avoid being sued. That doesn't take anything away from Captain Sully's bravery. Just that USAir has some 'splainin to do.

9. So it wasn't a bird strike, and the pilot was lying when he was communicating with the tower
and this is all a plot by some nefarious elements in the US Air boardroom to cover up a not unusual maintenance issue from two days previous?

MHOP or LIHOP?

7. Still doesn't explain the birds....it is totally possible that the
two incidents are unrelated. Birds sucked into any engine will cause some type of catastrophic failure....

8. Just because that plane suffered a compressor stall previous to this,
it does not mean it is the cause of the accident. Just saying that birds are most likely the cause as stated by the pilots.
