Russia to Clash with EU
Russia to Clash with EU
07/26/2003 13:18
Does the USA want to clash Russia and the EU against each other?
The influential American newspaper The Wall Street Journal has arrived at a conclusion that Russia will clash with the European Union. Russian troops are still present in Transdniestria which in fact means they are a occupation force there. The unrecognized republic of Transdniestria supported by Moscow maintains semi-legal armed groups of its own there. The American newspaper claims that there are numerous reasons to introduce European peacemaking troops into the republic.

The Wall Street Journal reports that in order to avoid confrontation between the Russian and EU troops, Moscow should immediately withdraw the troops from Moldova. Additionally, Transdniestria groups should disarm and Tiraspol as well as the capital of Transdniestria should reconcile itself to the status of being part of Moldova.

It is incredible that the influential newspaper that is so proud of its objectivity indulges in publications of such low standard. It is quite obvious that the article is a provocation. Are Russia and the EU about clash over Moldova?

It is an open secret that the European Union is considering sending its peacemaking troops to Moldova. The Netherlands, the OSCE chairman this year has suggested this idea. The OSCE, together with Russia, Ukraine, Moldova and Transdniestria is participating in negotiations on settlement of the conflict in Moldova. It was even reported that EU peacekeepers might enter the republic before the end of the year. However, many European politicians are not sure the EU should send its peacekeepers to Moldova. It should be mentioned that the USA immediately interfered into the conflict. Washington fears that it may be denied its say regarding the Moldavian problem; that is why it has warned the Europeans against further independent policy changes concering Moldova.

2. Wishful thinking

I can't help but think that certain circles within the Wall Street Journal *wish* that Russia and the EU would clash over certain topics.
Reading this headline I remember the situation in Germany in fall 2002, when the Financial Times Germany broke with an unwritten law here *never* to write in favour of one political party during elections. At that time they tried to "convince" the people here that it's time to vote for the rightwing/conservative CDU/CSU.

And besides that this tiny bit of disagreement between Russia and the EU never made the big news here. At least I didn't hear about it.

The news about Russia/EU relations here are saying the exact opposite: Russia is considering to use the Euro instead of the Dollar for the Oil trade.
