Liberian rebels reject U.S. calls to withdraw
Lets see here now. The rebels want to get rid of the guy Bush says he wants to get rid of. We are telling the same rebels to leave. The rebels are telling us to sit on it and spin. I can't make heads or tails of this. What side are we on here? Anyone know?

ABIDJAN, July 27 (Reuters) - The leader of Liberia's main rebel faction said on Sunday he would not withdraw his fighters from the capital Monrovia until foreign peacekeepers arrived, rejecting U.S. calls for an immediate pullback.

Sekou Conneh, chairman of the rebel Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD), said the rebels were ready to hand over some positions, like the city's port, to West African peacekeepers expected to deploy this week.

"Why should I pull back? We'll hand over positions to the peacekeepers, not to (President Charles) Taylor," Conneh told Reuters by telephone.

Earlier on Sunday, the United States called on the rebels to withdraw from Monrovia as fighters gained ground against government forces and mortar bombs terrorised the city's residents.
