U.S. Troops Hunting Fugitives Attack Baghdad House
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=564&ncid=716&e=11&u=/nm/20030727/ts_nm/iraq_raid_dc

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. troops attacked a house in an upscale Baghdad neighborhood on Sunday and local residents said there were rumors they were hunting for Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) or members of his family.

Reuters correspondent Miral Fahmy said a road in the Mansur district had been sealed off and the area was swarming with troops. Soldiers on the scene refused to comment and military spokesmen said they had no immediate information on the raid.

Officials at a city hospital said five bodies had been brought from the scene of the raid.

Two parked cars near the house raided by soldiers smoldered on the street after having been ablaze earlier.

2. Is this the same story that said Saddam is
changing locations every 2-4 hours? How the hell do they know that?

If they are really hot on his heels, what's the trouble? Too many Iraqi's hiding him? Gee let's kill them too. Oops, I guess that's what they've been doing all along.

4. The Independent has an article
but unfortunately it's not free. (It's on their front page at the moment, www.independent.co.uk -- only a synopsis is available.) They are saying that Americans opened fire in a crowded street, killing up to 11 civilians. I suppose there has been little coverage of this in US media.

5. According to BBC we killed 5 innocent civilians (payback?)
Looks like our version of the Waffen SS has been busy lately winning the hearts and minds:

A raid in Baghdad by elite US troops searching for Saddam Hussein has reportedly left up to five Iraqi civilians dead.

An angry crowd gathered outside a house in the upmarket Mansur suburb of the capital after the raid involving Task Force 20 troops.

In a separate operation, US forces also raided farms in the Tikrit area early on Sunday in an unsuccessful bid to snatch the former Iraqi leader's security chief.

As Wolfie says, you gotta act on "murky" intelligence every once in a while. :) http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=37021&mesg_id=37021&page=">LINK

7. WAFFEN SS
The tactics are reminiscent of the Special Action (Einsatzcommando) groups that hunted Jews in the Ukraine, and Latvia and Lithuania.

Kill everyone, shoot anything that moves

12. Task Force 20
These guys are nothing like the Waffen SS, at least the SS was willing
to suffer casualties, and some of the units they fought against gave as good as they got.

This is Task Force 20, the so-called "elite". Wasn't it this group that went up against some doctors to rescue PFC Lynch.

Also, didn't Task Force 20 kill sheep smugglers and wound Syrian border guards.

Wasn't it Task Force 20 that was held off for 6 hours by three men
and a teenaged boy.

It would seem that Task Force 20 can only fight against unarmed or poorly armed civilians or border guards, with any rate of success.
Against someone who is willing to put up a fight and has the firepower to back it up, Task Force 20 has to get assistance, some
"elite" unit!!!

19. THE LINK TO THE MURDER
http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,1007694,00.html

Fifteen minutes later, a Toyota Corona being driven by a man called Mazin, who was disabled and walked with the aid of a frame, arrived in the area. His wife was in the passenger seat and his teenage son in the back. If he had turned left out of the small lane that led to their house, they might all still be alive.

Instead, Mazin made the mistake of turning right towards the roadblock. A bullet from the volley of shots fired at the car passed through the windscreen and blew off the right half his head, according to Ahmed Ibrahim, who runs an optician's shop opposite the Al Sa'ah restaurant.

13. This is nuts.
Edited on Mon Jul-28-03 06:18 PM by LeviathanCrumbling
You know I support our troop, at least most of them, but I am a human first and an American second. These people are guilty of war crimes, a lot of our troop are right now. Saying I was just following orders doesn’t cut it, even if these kids don’t know better. There needs to be some accountability. Is it un-American for me to want to see these guys, and the guys guilty of beating the prisoners up, answer to an international court?

edit: along with the rest of the thugs

14. We wouldn't do this here
Yes, I know we've had some awful incidents. But generally speaking, this wouldn't happen here. Cops would never just shoot up a car because it happened upon a crime scene. They have no respect for Iraqi citizens at all, that's why this is happening.

15. Shooting up cars is a pathetic gesture, absolutely pathetic

and a sign of desperation. Someday soon the book will be written
about this "war", the needless loss of lives on both sides, the
grasp for Oil that will never flow in amounts dreamed of by
the Neocons, the emotional and Psychological burden
our young troops will carry, as they try to forget gunning down
civilian women and children as they begin to care for their own.
It will be remembered by the World as a hateful and willful destruction
of an ancient nation that was no danger to anyone, of Greed
and the abuse of Power gone mad. Of a people not liberated ,but
beaten and subjugated until it finally became obvious that
just as in America, a people will fight to the last man for their
country-- regardless of how they feel about the man who leads it.
