AOL axing 700 jobs in cost-cutting move
Source: Crain's

AP) - Time Warner Inc.'s AOL business is cutting up to 700 jobs, or about 10% of the Internet unit's work force, in a bid to cut costs.

AOL Chief Executive Randy Falco told employees in a memo Wednesday that AOL plans to cut the jobs in the next several quarters. He also said that AOL will skip merit pay raises in 2009.

AOL has unsuccessfully attempted to shift from being an Internet access provider to an advertising-focused company. Time Warner has been working to split the operations of its access and advertising businesses, a move that could make it easier to sell one or both.

3. They shut down all of the Hometown pages on 31 Oct - NO WARNING AT ALL!
I've had AOL since like version 1.2 or something so I've got a lot of contacts tied to those screen names. The handwriting is on the wall. I started moving everything to non-AOL e-mail addresses back in November and I'm almost done. If you've got any important contacts tied to an AOL e-mail, switch them to another provider NOW!

4. I knew a doctor downtown that still uses AOL for email
I mean...really... some people just don't care what their customer think.

ie: DrSmith@aol.com or doctorjohnsmith@aol.com ??

This is 2009 !! Get your own Domain name already.
The doctor I knew had a IT department (two + people) to setup and maintain his Data Servers, but he didn't want to change.
