2. Thomas Donohue
Edited on Wed Jan-28-09 07:57 PM by musette_sf
is an anti-American, anti-worker POS.

some choice snips:

"An expansion of the current 'Buy American' rules would be a dumb idea, it would be a bad idea because the natural reaction would be for our trade partners to react in kind"

U.S. businesses also fear the provision could push up costs by forcing companies to certify the origin of materials.

oh noes!!!11! the masses think we owe them information on which toxic hellhole their cheap crap comes from! :sarcasm:

from another article ("China stimulus must not erode competition") earlier in the month:

Donohue, in Beijing for talks with top officials, told reporters earlier that it would be essential that the United States and China both fight the protectionist leanings that the current economic slowdown were bound to spawn.

What does the US part stand for again? "Unlimited Subterfuge?" "Un-American Sh*tburgers?" "Unrepentant Sluts?"

9. They're also against employing American's: they wrote the "comprehensive immigration reform"
legislation, loading it with thousands of new unskilled labor visas, etc. Google it, it's an eye opener.

12. That is the whole story. It's really short. Probably because it's so important.
The MSM wouldn't want the American people to know that the Chamber is bragging in Davos about how nobody has to worry about us buying American.

15. They've posted the full story at a different URL, here:
...
The House approved a provision on Wednesday requiring public works funded by its $825 billion stimulus package to use only U.S.-made iron and steel.

Donohue said the provisions would violate international trading rules and be counterproductive to U.S. interests.

"An expansion of the current 'Buy American' rules would be a dumb idea, it would be a bad idea because the natural reaction would be for our trade partners to react in kind," he said.

Donohue said in an interview he believed the provision, which could lead to shortages of material in the United States, would either be amended in a conference between the House and Senate on the package, or never fully implemented.

19. Here's a good resource on the Chamber's union-busting
The introduction is quoted below. There are also many links with information on the Chamber's anti-labor initiatives, its alliance with the notorious Rick Berman and his front groups and tactics, and other anti-labor and right wing groups.

http://www.americanrightsatwork.org/the-anti-union-network/chamber-of-commerce/

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the nation’s most powerful business lobbying organization1, has been campaigning against unions, fair labor practices, increases in the minimum wage, and legal protections for America’s workers for nearly a century. The Chamber’s anti-union initiatives are just one part of its multi-issue agenda. Unlike other anti-union organizations, this prominent lobbying force does not hide its alignment with big business.

Headquartered in Washington, DC, the Chamber has an annual budget of $150 million and 300 staff members. With President Thomas J. Donohue at the helm, annual contributions to the Chamber from its largest corporate members rose from $600,000 to $90 million in less than a decade. Since he took office in 1997, Donohue has built a more aggressive and politically-powerful Chamber not afraid to take on controversial issues at the request of its large corporate donors and the Bush White House. This direction has caused the Business Roundtable and other moderate members of the business community to distance themselves from the organization.

Even when Donohue first took office Business Week expressed caution at his “frontal assault on unions,” commenting that “Polls show strong public support for giving workers their piece of an expanding economic pie.” Although an increasing number of its member organizations pursue cooperative and socially-responsible labor relations, the Chamber continues to advocate against unions, and appears to be ramping up its attack.
