Michael Steele wins RNC chairmanship race
Former Maryland Lt. Governor to be first African-American chair

WASHINGTON - Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele beat out South Carolina GOP chief Katon Dawson in the sixth round of voting at Fridays Republican National Committee meeting Friday, becoming the first African-American chairman of the party.

The two Republicans fought for the national party chairmanship Friday after Mike Duncan, former President George W. Bush's hand-picked national GOP chief, abandoned his re-election bid in the fact of dwindling support.

Duncan's departure ensured a fresh face at the beleaguered GOP's helm as Republicans seek to rebound from back-to-back defeats in national elections that gave Democrats control of Congress and the White House.

41. 2006 pic of Michael Steel with signs saying he's a Democrat
Oliver Willis blogged it:

CNN Gives Michael Steele His Wannabe Wish
November 2nd, 2006 | 10:19 pm | 2006 Election, Ben Cardin, Conservatives, Maryland, Michael Steele, Republicans

I can’t completely blame the techs at CNN for their gaffe. Michael Steele has signs up declaring him to be a Democrat, tries to pretend he’s never been a Bush supporter, while wearing a jumpsuit that apparently had him from head to toe in Democratic blue.

Of course they’re going to think he’s a Democrat.

But like the Spice Girls sang, Michael Steele is a “wannabe”. He’s a right-wing Republican, who is against stem cell research, against a woman’s right to choose, against affirmative action, and for the Iraq war. That he supports a party that works night and day against blacks and other minorities also shows that he’s a failure as a black man, but he’s too ashamed to fly under their banner no matter what the mindless sheep who pimp his candidacy say (and of course CNN was too chicken to call him on it). You get the feeling Michael Steele would say anything to get elected.

53. Steele's 2006 campaign was largely based on indirect suggestions he was a Democratic: his ads
didn't identify him as a Republican, and the campaign handed out thousands of "Steele Democrat" yardsigns and bumperstickers

This choice may say a lot about the upcoming Republican playbook

Maybe the GOP can't but WE can tell a Thurgood Marshall from a Clarence Thomas. We can tell a Barack Obama from an Alan Keyes or a Michael Steele. We can tell genuine leadership and representation from blatant political PANDERING.

The rank and file will love it. It proves they are not racist. They love it when a minority is in a leadership role. It shows everyone how "inclusive" they are. Just as long as the minority knows his or her place and stays there. Remember, they are the party of equality. Just as long as everyone stays in their place.

77. Yes it is. But Mr. Steele was making his race an election issue.
The "Oreo incident" was Morgan State universities way of telling Mr. Steele. Come on now, your not THAT damned black. It had nothing to do with him being black. It had everything to do him making hsi race a campaign issue. Apparently Obama has learned from that. He refused to allow hsi race become a campaign issue. In his visit to Baltimore he had the morgan state university chior rocking the crowd. Not a single cookie was thrown. That's because Obama ran as a man.Mike Steele ran as a BLACK man. Both were historical elections.

Now an African American because the Obama is in the White House.

The good that will probably come from this is that this will probably drive a lot of old school GOP members from the party. I can't wait to see how Limbaugh & Co. spin this.

60. The Oreo joke/allegation
An Oreo cookie has two dark wafers with white frosting in between. Years ago, "Oreo" was used as a slur against blacks who were seen (especially by other blacks) as trying to hard to emulate whites -- they were black on the outside but white on the inside. I don't think this usage is nearly so common as it once was.

In 2002, when Steele was running for Lieutenant Governor, there was a gubernatorial candidates' debate. Beginning five days after the debate, some Republicans alleged that Democrats had been handing out or throwing or rolling Oreo cookies to mock Steele. Other eyewitnesses dispute the (inconsistent) Republican charges. You can see further details of the incident on or .

43. IMO this is good news for us because he plays to the new hate radio leadership
Steele seems IMO to be the best choice for us because he's already married himself to hate radio and we know that when they run the party - as they've been doing since McCain was picked e.g. Palin - they pull it further to the right thus throwing more votes our way.

I'm sure that at least some RNC votes today were done to show that "this aint your father's republican party" but the novelty of Steele's race will wear off in extremely short order once he sets out to placate the hate radio base. He's also less accomplished than republicans said Obama was, IMO - from a skill-set standpoint he seems to be an extremely poor choice.

This could change, but for now I'm happy with Steele.
