China nightclub fire kills 15 (Indoor Fireworks Again)
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- A group celebrating a birthday shot off fireworks at their table and set fire to a bar in China's Fujian province, leading to the deaths of 15 people, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Another 17 were injured.

The fire happened Saturday at a "Latin-style" bar and restaurant in Changle City at about 11:55 p.m.

The explosion from the fireworks set the ceiling on fire, and the entire bar was soon engulfed in flames, Xinhua cited a city government spokesman as saying on Sunday.

He told Xinhua the fire was put out in about 30 minutes and that three of the injured were in critical condition.

Changle City has closed all entertainment facilities in response to the fire.

1. Is it just me - or does this obsession with
explosions seem to be affecting the cognitive abilities of those obsessed?

Shooting off fireworks inside a building ranks right up there with chopping off your leg so you can see the bottom of your foot . . .

2. In a culture where fireworks are used to celebrate everything, one can have the mistaken impression
that they're perfectly safe. The answer to this will be a complete ban on fireworks being brought inside clubs without a permit.

3. First off it is not INDOOR FIREWORKS
It is OUTDOOR fireworks being used indoors.

I'm a licensed pyrotechnician who shoots both indoor and outdoor. Indoor fireworks are quite safe when used appropriately. If some asshole shoots outdoor exhibition fireworks indoors this is the result.

4. I experienced a big indoor fireworks display in Linköping, Sweden, a few years back.
It was Santa Lucia Day (December 13) in Sweden, and I was at a dinner for several hundred that Saab Aircraft was hosting in Linköping. We were not told of the pending fireworks show, and it was terrifying. After the initial shock of flash and noise, the choking smoke made a number of people ill.
