Kellogg To Drop Phelps Over Pot Smoking Photo
Source: Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Cereal and snack maker Kellogg Co. says it will not renew its sponsorhip contract with Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps because he has acknowledged smoking marijuana last fall.

The Battle Creek, Mich.-based company said Thursday that Phelps's behavior — caught on camera and published Sunday — is "not consistent with the image of Kellogg."

The company put Phelps on boxes of its Frosted Flakes and Corn Flakes.

Phelps has kept the backing of many sponsors since the photos surfaced that showed him inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

88. OMG!! Now Mikey Will Need To Eat TOAST!! I Can't Even Think Of
the right words to express my outrage at this completely asinine action!!!

"My Generation" should RISE UP AND REVOLT!!! Legalize the stuff and collect the taxes!! At least with POT, most people "chill" at home as opposed to those who drink, drive AND sometimes kill! While I have no stats, I'd be willing to wager a large bet on the fact that MANY, MANY more people have been killed after drinking alcohol rather than having "one toke over the line!"

95. My mom once caught a ride home from work with a younger coworker
They stopped at a head shop because her driver wanted to pick up a couple tapes (they did sell music and mom thought it was just a record store). So the old one (who was probably the age I ame now when this happened) sees a sign by the cash register that says "Yes! We have bongs!". And she asks, "What's a bong? Is that like a bongo drum?"

She was not shocked when she found out what a bong is and has recently opined that this whole Phelps thing is "Stupid - I thought every kid at least tried grass." (yes, she calls it grass)

There is a difference, and cops do check stores out to make sure they are only selling water pipes.

71. I think a lot of younger folks are still unaware
of the ubiquitousness of cameras and the enduring power of the Internet. I mean, you wouldn't believe what people put on their Facebook and MySpace pages -- stuff that's really damaging to their careers down the road. That stuff, once posted, is forever. It's already showing up in court cases as an attack on their character -- and employers are starting to do Web searches on potential employees.

And I really don't get the thing with young guys and girls posting nude and pornographic pictures -- and videos -- of themselves online. Don't these people have mothers? To post a porn picture of yourself is the same as saying "I've decided I never want to have an important job." Kind of like tattooing a swastika on your forehead.

66. W.K. Kellogg was a first-class whackjob.
The guy was certifiably bonkers. However, he reflected the polluted-by-fundamentalist-religion misuse of science that was prevalent in his day (and still pops up far too often today.)

Kellogg's is oozing epic fail on this one.

As far as Corn Flakes stunting "those" urges, well....it never worked on me. :D :D

And it's way past time to tell the meddling ninnies to go to hell and just legalize pot already. I don't partake, but I think prohibition is a complete waste of time, money, and energy. God is not going to smite us or kill a puppy because someone's sparking up a fatty, fer pete's sake! :D

72. Damn
munchies list has been shortened... somehow "health food" does not cut it.

Kelloggs makes a bundle off of munchie food... Pot heads are a whole market they are offending/ignoring.

100. They were put in a tough spot
Let's face it, corporations don't usually make progressive stands on things like this. Even if they didn't see it as a big deal, and who knows if they really do or not, they are probably getting heat from AFA and all those nagging phony-moral-outrage groups.

59. I never cared for Phelps
always saw him as a corporate whore, but I found myself quickly sympathizing with him on this one. It's ridiculous how people would freak out over a young guy doing what many young people do. I only wish that we could use this as an opportunity to have a serious discussion about our lame-ass drug policy. But unfortunately the MSM won't have that.

60. I can't believe that Phelps is so willing to throw his life away.
Being hooked on reefer, he can't aspire to anything beyond a dead end life of hanging out at swimming pools, winning gold medals, and making millions of dollars.

If he finds the strength to break the chains of reefer addiction, he can be like me and have a rewarding life spending his days in a cubicle working with Microsoft Office products.

65. Children might be tempted to become pot heads and stoners by example ...
Edited on Fri Feb-06-09 09:55 AM by HamdenRice
but they are not likely to be tempted to become owners of negligent factories -- at least not until they grow up.

One case is about image and publicity; the other is about public safety.

And do you have any evidence that they did not drop the negligent factory? Isn't the factory closed?

Your comparison is apples and oranges -- ie completely illogical.

After all, what's using performance enhancing drugs to help you cheat next to the horrible message smoking marijuana sends?

68. NORML needs an attractive spokesperson
If you think about it, Kellogg is a direct competitor with hemp. They're probably part of the movement to keep it illegal.

Go, Michael! And thanks to all his sponsors who didn't drop him.

89. You're right.
Phelps is a hypertalented, incredibly gifted, fabulously wealthy athlete with a substance habit who stands to piss away a lifetime of earnings. Daly, on the other hand, is a hypertalented, incredibly gifted, fabulously wealthy athlete who has already pissed away a lifetime of earnings.

91. Taking a few bong hits on occasion is not having a "substance habit"
Mr. Daly is a very severe alcoholic. I find the comparison between the two stretching more than a bit, and I am not a fan of Phelps.

98. Phelps has more dui arrests
than Daly. I don't think he has an addiction-I think he has a habit. He now has a pattern of making bad choices. Choosing the herb over millions of dollars would, in my mind, constitute a problem. Let's see if he can separate himself from his Daly-ness.

99. In other news, crimsonblue to drop Kellog over douchebagginess.
Lawrence, Ks. -- DUer and marijuana enthusiast crimsonblue says he will not renew his purchasing of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes brand cereal because the company is fucking retarded.

The Lawrence, Kansas-based student said Friday that Kellog's behavior-- being stupid dicks-- is "not consistent with the munchies of crimsonblue."

The student put Frosted Flakes in his stomach after partaking in marijuana.

Crimsonblue has kept the boxes of many other cereals since the idiocy surfaced that showed Kellogg is a pathetic company, and he vows to keep Phelpsing bongs and enjoying Cocoa Puffs.
