Otter spotted with camera in slough
Source: Monterey (CA) Herald

Wildlife photographer Enrique Aguirre makes a point of visiting Monterey Bay once a month to capture images of herons, seals and sea otters. But on Feb. 3, the San Francisco-based freelancer found himself on the other end of the lens — with an otter at the viewfinder.

Aguirre was on Capt. Yohn Gideon's Elkhorn Slough Safari boat with several other professional photographers when the group spotted an otter in the distance. Gideon steered closer as Aguirre framed the shot. Then, Aguirre noticed something odd.

"I was like, did I actually see an otter with a video camera or was I hallucinating?" he said.

The screen on Aguirre's digital camera soon confirmed what he'd seen: an otter floating on its back, video camera grasped in its paws, lens aimed at the boat of excited photographers. The humans had a bad angle, but Aguirre managed to snap a single clear shot before the otter dived, video camera in tow.

28. This group of photogs happened upon a secret Coast Guard effort to rid Calif.
beaches of nude bathers. Previous (human) efforts only caught blurred images of nudists hastily re-dressing. But this new angle on
surveillance has yielded many surprised offenders and solid photographic evidence for subsequent arrest and prosecution.
Go seals!
P.S. : This clandestine program has been refunded under the new 'stimulus' plan.

35. Otters love toys
Edited on Fri Feb-20-09 03:28 AM by harpboy_ak
I've watched both land and sea otters play with all kinds of stuff they find, from fishing floats to rubber duckies to bleach jugs. They really love toys!

OTOH, Alaska Fish & Game biologists have been putting crittercams on lots of animals, in part to monitor their dietary intake. They've done it with Orcas, black and brown bears, deer, moose, and caribou. Dunno if they've done it yet with otters but I wouldn't be surprised. Some of these lightweight cams transmit imaages, and some just store them until the animal is either captured or the camera is released by remote control. In most cases, the cams also contain tracking transmitters that also transmit the GPS position.

One of the Public TV science programs last year did a program on these critter cams, and the images were quite amazing.

40. His posts are kinda boring - Just a lot of footage of old hippies wearing Birkenstocks....
staring into the camera. Occasionally one of the old hippies tosses his cookies, but that's about it.
