Homophobic remarks cost Buttars chairmanship
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 10:26 AM by WillBowden
Source: 365gay.com and Associated Press

(Salt Lake City, Utah) A Utah state senator has been kicked off the judicial committee he chaired after he drew criticism for comparing gay activists to radical Muslims in an interview.

Sen. Chris Buttars, R-West Jordan, also told former local television reporter Reed Cowan, an openly gay documentary producer who now works at a Miami station, that gay activists are “probably the greatest threat to America going down.”

The comments drew calls for Buttars’ resignation in Utah and elsewhere. The Washington, D.C.-based Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, said that by Friday more than 15,000 e-mails had been sent to Utah Senate President Michael Waddoups, R-Taylorsville, demanding that he condemn Buttars’ remarks.

Waddoups did not condemn Buttars’ statements and said he kicked Buttars off the committee primarily as a way to draw attention away from him. In a brief news conference Friday, Waddoups declined to say what comments - if any - Buttars made that he and other Republicans disagreed with.

Darn open mouth insert foot comments. The rest of the article is a fascinating piece on a man on the fringe of reality. Well, outer fringe. Different planet, maybe...

5. Probably activists are “probably the greatest threat to America going down.”
Now that is a double entendre comment if I ever heard one.

7. Aaah, but read more closely:
" ... Waddoups declined to say what comments - if any - Buttars made that he and other Republicans disagreed with ..."

So they may not necessarily have disagreed with any of Buttars' comments ... but knew it was going to be a PR nightmare
and had to give him the heave-ho.

:(

13. Really, these guys must be very doubtful of their own sexuality
If they think gay people having rights will lead to their loss of heterosexual freedoms to marry and have children.

Like gay people don't have kids?

16. The most fearful people always seem to be the loudest.
It's like the people who used to decry divorce as an abomination; strikes me that if you really were that much about your family values, you wouldn't be so terrified of your spouse having the option of dumping you.

Either that or we're completely wrong about the situation, and it's simply that all conservative Christians actually got married solely as a massive taunt against gay people, and legalizing gay marriage really WOULD make their marriages meaningless.

11. OK ... this guy was teased mercilessly growing up, because his name is Buttars.
He's taking it all out on the "gay conspiracy."

Note how he said, "the biggest threat going down." Freudian slip? I think not.

I expect to see Sen. Buttars nabbed in an airport men's room any day now.
