Sumatran tigers kill six people in Indonesia
Source: Reuters

JAKARTA, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Endangered Sumatran tigers have killed six people in Indonesia's Jambi province since early February, including three illegal loggers in the most recent attacks, a conservation official said on Monday.

Authorities had trapped a female tiger believed to be behind three killings earlier this month in the area in eastern Sumatra, but the capture had not stopped the latest killings, said Didy Wurjanto, head of the Jambi nature conservation agency.

On Sunday, a tiger attacked and killed a man carrying logs near an illegal logging camp, Wurjanto said. Two other loggers in the same area were mauled and killed on Saturday.

Preliminary findings suggested the attacks were taking place because people were disturbing the habitat of the tigers, Wurjanto said.

1. Good for the tigers!
If they were logging in areas they shouldn't be in and encroaching on the habitat, then they shoud be eaten.

4. I don't either - tigers will be tigers.
At the same time, I hope this doesn't lead to armed illegal forestry. :(

10. I feel sorry for the tigers also. Did you ever see that article/show on hat masks?
It was yrs back. People were wearing face masks like hats on the back of their heads, since tigers usually attacked from the back. This was a group of people getting wood from around the edges of some mangrovey area. The masks made it look like both sides of the people had faces, and the tiger attacks had dropped way off. But they were expecting the tigers to eventually figure out the trick.

Yes, I feel sorry for the tigers as well as the people.

19. No shit, Sherlock.
That's why I have an 8-lb house cat for a pet and not a 500-lb tiger.

Tigers are large wild animals that require a lot of territory. They WILL defend it. If you come in their territory poaching, well....ya lays down yr money and ya takes yr chances.

17. Sumatran Tigers have been on the verge of extinction for a long time, I hope this doesn't make
the illegal loggers/habitat destroyers go on a search and destroy mission and finally wipe them out.

Good for the tigers. I've worked for an orang-utan NGO in the rain forests of Borneo to help catch illegal loggers and have seen the decimation 1st hand. Illegal loggers deserve everything they get. They've made a life decision to do what they are doing and they get no sympathy whatsoever from me.

Tigers are an endangered species. Humans aren't. I'm not feeling much pity for the people here.

Well, no shit.

Of course a tiger will defend its territory, especially when its habitat is being destroyed. I feel bad that these people are likely in dire poverty, but this logging activity was clearly not permitted anyway and they were inviting themselves to danger. The world really has to find more sustainable ways for such people to make a living. Deforestation, poaching, etc. are all the results of poverty and exploitation...

Wow, take a look at these though. They're beautiful creatures.

I hope we have them around for a while. But at the rate we're destroying these habitats and species I wonder if another generation or two from now, these animals will survive in the wild...

21. Beautiful indeed! Maybe they should put up life sized billboards of this throughout the rain forest?
