I may cry - the first wild jaguar to be captured and fitted with a radio-collar in the United States -- and the only jaguar known to be living here -- was euthanized in Phoenix, AZ Monday night.

2. That's sad because of the data they will lose
but it was an old kitty with failing kidneys. It would have been terrible to release it to die in agony.

3. Why do humans always end up euthanizing nearly endangered species?
Given how extraordinarily rare this species is, why not let it have a fighting chance?

4. This one was 16 years old and had kidney failure
One of the reasons that they were able to capture and collar it in the 1st place was that it was old and sick and not moving very fast.

9. it had lost 18 lbs in just two weeks - it was obviously not hunting well.
Probably how it was trapped in the first place - it went for bait, because it couldn't catch prey.

6. It sounds like he had already lost the fight. They just let him go without any
further suffering.
