Workers die on China rail project
Source: BBC

At least nine workers have died in the collapse of a construction site on the Shanghai-Nanjing railway in eastern China, state media say.

Four railway workers are still missing in the accident, which occurred in early morning in Jiangsu province, Xinhua news agency says.

Initial reports suggested a gas explosion at a workers' dormitory had caused the collapse.

China has ambitious railway plans but a poor safety record for workers.

1. One of the things holding China back is its own poor manufacturing and poor labeling
practices. The article suggests a gas explosion at a dorm. I'm wondering if that was caused by poorly manufactured fittings or perhaps pipe that wasn't as good as labeled. I saw footage of the aftermath of a terrible explosion at a Chinese aluminum rolling mill. The plant was brand new, and the explosion was traced to a high pressure steam pipe that burst (wter plus molten aluminum does some scary things - like releasing hydrogen which causes secondary explosions)

The pipe in question was labeled Made in USA and was stamped with all the proper certifications. It had been made at a Chinese steel mill ten miles down the road.

You think melamine in our food chain is a problem? What about thousands of bolts and steel beams that are in our system that aren't what they're supposed to be? I've seen a "stainless steel" flange in service that was covered with rust! Three other flanges purchased at the same time were fine, but that one was a forgery.
