FBI planting spies in U.S. mosques, Muslim groups say

By Eliott C. McLaughlin
CNN

(CNN) -- Ten U.S. Muslim organizations threatened this week to cease working with the FBI, citing "McCarthy-era tactics" by the agency, including efforts to covertly infiltrate California mosques.

The groups claim the FBI has sent undercover agents posing as worshippers into mosques, pressured Muslims to become informants, labeled civil rights advocates as criminals and spread misinformation.

Though the statement does not name the mosque member, the Council on American-Islamic Relations said last month it would seek an investigation into the February 21 arrest of Ahmadullah Niazi, an Afghanistan native.

"Mr. Niazi previously reported to and other community members that, during a raid of a friend's house, an FBI agent urged Mr. Niazi to work with the agency, saying that if he refused to cooperate his life would be made a 'living hell,' " a news release said.

1. Niazi was arrested because of an FBI informant who infiltrated a Mosque

An Irvine man who claims he worked as an FBI informant to infiltrate mosques and gather information about a man now accused of lying about ties to al-Qaida said this week that he spent four to five hours a day with the suspect, and he now fears his life may be in danger from extremist groups.

Craig Monteilh, 46, says he recorded Ahmadullah Sais Niazi discussing jihad, weapons and plans to blow up abandoned buildings.

Monteilh filed court documents Wednesday saying he served as a confidential informant for the FBI from July 2006 to October 2007 to identify and thwart terrorist operations in the Orange County Islamic community.

They used informants to infiltrate mosques in Ohio as well.

I daresay this has been going on since September 12, 2001, if no sooner. Mosques should screen their new members VERY carefully...

3. Yup. It's happening here in MN too.
Mpls has a very large Somali community in an area known as the West Bank. Several young men have gone missing in the past few months, and one turned up as a suicide bomber in Somali. The FBI feels that these kids are possibly being recruited at the mosque. The Somali folks I've talked to feel it's BS; they think the kids got into drugs first and then got recruited from somewhere else.

The problem is that, like any large recent group of immigrants, there have been some growing pains in terms of assimilation. This is compounded to some extent by their "otherness"; most Somali women wear bright colored traditional clothing, headscarves, head-to-toe flowing dresses, etc.
So now we have a highly visible segment of society who are being associated with terrorists. They are justifiably concerned.

Here's a link to local story from last week.

4. One thing that would reduce extremism
would be to let the (potential) muslim fundamentalists know that the only people their actions benefit is the neocons. The neocons want more terrorism - it makes them more powerful (and it's good for business in their eyes).

5. for crying out loud
they've infiltrated peace groups. Thanks for posting current news but FBI infiltration is hardly an unknown known.

I think "we'd" be amazed at the illegalities going on - under Obama.

We should expect growth in and further radicalization of the Christian Identity movement these days, for one. I very much hope they're being infiltrated by the FBI.

8. I'd bet you money they do.
At least 11 of the victims of the Oklahoma City Bombing were DEA or Secret Service.

12. I was just thinking the same thing. Also, what about the Bush Cartel, the Carlyle Group,
Rumsfeld's private "Office of Special Plans" in exile, Diebold, ES&S and brethren, Exxon Mobil, the AEC, the AIPAC, the Federalist Society, the RNC, the Miami mafia, the Colombian mafia (and government), and, well, I can think of a lot of groups that are far, far, FAR more destructive of our country than bomb throwers. Vast, long term, irreparable destruction. "Shock and awe" level destruction.
