Anti-illegal immigrant groups launch Mexico tourism boycott
Source: OCR

A coalition of anti-illegal immigrant advocates with a goal of halting American tourism to Mexico are distributing fliers along the San Ysidro border that accuse the country of being aggressive and hostile to the United States and disrespectful of its laws.

Americans United to Halt Tourism in Mexico – formed by Minutemen groups across the country and local groups such as Huntington Beach-based California Coalition for Immigration Reform – is urging Americans bound for sun and fun south of the border to instead visit the U.S. Southwest.

"Do not give your tourist dollars to Mexico!" the fliers say.

Aside from passing out the fliers along the border, some advocates say they plan to distribute them soon at college campuses in Orange County.

Perhaps not as many drunken revelers, but spring break in Cancun will go on.

3. So let me get this straight....
Anti-illegal immigrant groups want to boycot tourism in Mexico,

which creates jobs in Mexico,

and keeps people working in Mexico,

so that they don't have to emigrate...

Is it just me, or is this plan like...

shooting yourself in the fucking foot?

8. Tourism in mexico
has happened for many many years.
But there aren't enough of those jobs down there, so they come up here.
This protest isn't going to affect anything one way or the other.
Like boycotting Coppertone to stop the sun from shining so much. Mexico doesn't care either way.

12. I'm just saying that these
kinds of protests don't work.
Especially because Mexico is very two faced about the whole immigration thing. I heard a story last year about a fire that broke out on the Mexican side of the border. The construction workers that we building the border fence saw it and ran over to put it out. The Mexican government is furious. It's ok for their people to stream across the border like the last one there gets stuck with the check. But if one of us comes here without permission, even to help, there is Hell to pay.

don't miss the news from the CNN archives

Anti-Immigrant Sites Link To Fake CNN Story Claiming Hispanics Started Wildfires

At first look, "Separatists Claim Responsibility For California Wildfires" appears to be like any other story on CNN.com. The article claims that California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has confirmed that a radical Hispanic organization had taken responsibility for the fires that raged through southern California this week. The article even says there's photographic proof "of individuals holding Molotov cocktails, then throwing them into dry brush."

But of course, after the initial shock of the report, the sharp-eyed can figure out that it's a hoax. To start with, the site's URL is cnnheadlienews.com -- note the "headlie" instead of "headline." CNN's web address is cnn.com, and the address for its sister network Headline News is cnn.com/HLN/.

COLUMBUS, N.M. - A 1.5-mile barrier along the U.S.-Mexico border was designed to keep cars from illegally crossing into the United States. There's just one problem: It was accidentally built on Mexican soil. Now embarrassed border officials say the mistake could cost the federal government more than $3 million to fix.

Mexico-U.S. brush fire sparks diplomatic protest

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico complained to the United States in a diplomatic note on Tuesday after learning that U.S. Border Patrol agents crossed into its territory a day earlier to extinguish a fast-spreading brush fire.

Reacting quickly after winds blew a grass fire into Mexico, U.S. Border Patrol agents followed the flames across the border with two water trucks, Mexico's foreign ministry said. The ministry cited a U.S. government report it received on Tuesday.

After extinguishing the fire just inside in the state of Sonora, the U.S. agents, normally responsible for nabbing illegal Mexican immigrants, returned to their side of the border with their equipment, according to the report.

"While the ministry recognizes the incursion may have been to attend to an emergency, according to the U.S. Embassy, it has been reiterated that even during emergencies it is necessary without exception to immediately notify Mexican authorities," the finance ministry said.

Mexican soldiers: Crossing into U.S. accidental

“The seven individuals in the vehicle were dressed in military-style clothing,” CBP said.

The men told CBP agents they were members of the Mexican military. Agents told them they were inside the United States and “peaceably” took them into custody, the statement said. “At no time were any hostilities exchanged between the agents and military officials.”

30. With the fire,
Next time just inform the authorities and let them deal with it, including the damage that happens in the mean time, I guess. They can send millions of illegal aliens into the US, but don't you DARE come south of the border for any reason without their permission, even if it is to help.
Why should we respect the border if they don't?

11. They are playing follow the leader for the wackos out there
When the truck treaty was suspended the recommendation to not visit Mexico started to come out, most likely because it was known that Mexico was gonna impose higher tariffs on US imports, so now there is another reason to hate Mexicans, and some wackos are trying to become the leaders of Sacha hate movements

29. Here's what it's about...
Since the Mexican govt. won't listen to people, the only way to make them listen is to hit them in the wallet.

Saying such a boycott is pointless is like saying people should shop at Wal-Mart.

27. only idiot parents who like Tenet (ex CIA) will keep their kids from going
Mexico is totally SAFE!

alas, Mexico is terrified that idiots will listen to the likes of Tenet....tourism is their second largest source of GDP so it would be disasterous for it to wane, and the recession is bad enough

and, starting a trade war with Mexico is so stupid and dangerous!!!!!

21. I grew up in San Diego and made many trips into Mexico.
Unfortunately the problems that are being sensationalized now aren't really new. I just returned from the Yucatan Peninsula and had an incredible time. Unfortunately, living in Alaska now doesn't give me a lot of time to practice my Spanish and would embarrass my dad, but I was able to manage.

and went into a store to try to buy trunks for my cousin. I asked the ladies for a calsoneta and they looked at me like, crazy gringa -- go away! Because I should have asked for a traje de bano but what did I know? My Spanish is a jumble of El Salvador and Mexico. It was a nice trip. My mom flirted with the whole Brazilian team and it was the last one with my favorite uncle before he went to the big heavenly soccer stadium. I love Mexico. :)

of an older gent ahead of me in a grocery line once carping as only self-righteous fundy wingers can about some instant coffee because the label was in Spanish. Well I used to buy that brand and it had Spanish and English labels. What really sticks in my craw is that the store stopped carrying it.

37. LOL, could be. I tried to politely suggest that he try it
but he was off in Jesus land, saving his precious bodily fluids from teh Aztec army. He made a whole production of it too, showing the clerk and half the store how he pulled it off the shelf and when he saw the label, "I just put it right back on the shelf," like something he'd probably seen on TV.

Anyway it was called Buen Dia and it was great stuff, good price too.

This is in the IE where certain parts are very old-time religious, not the Rush Limbaugh way (those too) but Seventh Day Adventist and Mormon ways, so there's a certain apartheid mentality you see sometimes.
