'Spider-Man' rescues autistic Thai boy
Edited on Tue Mar-24-09 03:34 AM by depakid
Source: Sydney Morning Herald

A Thai fireman turned superhero when he dressed up as comic-book character Spider-Man to coax a frightened eight-year-old from a balcony, police said on Tuesday. Teachers at a special needs school in Bangkok alerted authorities on Monday when an autistic pupil, scared of attending his first day at school, sat out on the third-floor ledge and refused to come inside, a police sergeant told AFP.

Despite teachers' efforts to beckon the boy inside, he refused to budge until his mother mentioned her son's love of superheroes, prompting fireman Sonchai Yoosabai to take a novel approach to the problem.

The rescuer dashed back to his fire station and made a quick change into a Spider-Man costume before returning to the boy, he said.

"I told him Spider-Man is here to rescue you, no monsters are going to attack you and I told him to walk slowly towards me as running could be dangerous," Somchai told local television.

1. That is awesome.
Just for the record, I keep a spare Batman costume handy for just such occasions however, people keep running away from me. :(

9. And Disney would sue the firefighter for copyright infringment...
And Marvel ought to send him something better than a no-prize as a thank-you.

7. What a wonderful story.
Reminds me of the story Keith Olbermann has told about some parents who told him many years ago, back when he was on ESPN, that they had a son who would never communicate with anyone, and then they found a drawing of his that was an illustration of Keith's catch phrases from SportsCenter: "biscuit in the basket" and so on. They didn't know how or why, but he'd made a connection with their son.

This guy found a way to make the same kind of connection when it was very important.

19. I remember reading about a child who only related to a certain pro wrestler
so the parents and their doctor arranged a meeting...Woot, here it is!

Autism Spectrum Disorder, considered one of the fastest-growing developmental disabilities...inhibits communication and interpersonal skills, along with other symptoms. But Willie and Tommy are beating autism at its own game – and WWE has been instrumental in their progress...

“We would all start watching WWE together as a family...What the shows enabled us to do is help him to understand different social situations.”

According to the Autism Society of America...social skills training is an important part of treatment for those diagnosed with autism. This training teaches children the nuts and bolts of social situations. And each show – Raw, SmackDown and ECW – presents various ways for Donohue to teach her sons...about some of life’s lessons...

So it turns out to be good for something, LOL!
