Canada may host U.S. missiles
Edited on Mon Feb-23-04 08:55 AM by Minstrel Boy
Ottawa — Canada is talking to Washington about the use of Canadian soil for stationing interceptor rocket launchers and radar stations as part of a continental ballistic missile defence program.

Defence Minister David Pratt yesterday said Canada is considering making some of its geography in the north available in lieu of a major cash contribution if the federal government decides to join the American program.

Until now, federal officials have said that Canadian participation in the U.S. program probably would not involve Canadian territory or a cash contribution.

3. Can you spell MOTHER OF ALL WEDGE ISSUES?
Martin wouldn't be so foolish would he, not after Diefenbaker, Pearson and Trudeau's experiences with US missiles?

5. What I meant was, how could he be so dumb to offer us such a prize?
This is worth a couple of points in the polls for the NDP, believe me.

6. He's not dumb. He's just a greedy prick and.....................
he knows damn well he is not getting "elected" again. So he is probably getting paid something. His agenda before he got that office was to run down and kiss the ass of Bush and get Canada back in bed with America again. Why??????? Why is he so concerned with aiding and assisting America????????????? This is what makes me distrust him so much. He is up to something for sure. He is so sleekit.......

9. Canada should just say a flat out NO WAY!!!
.
.
.

I'm sure Russia and China will not be thrilled with the idea of more missiles moving CLOSER to their countries.

So, in their OWN best interests, they would be almost forced to move more missiles further north, and where does one think that they will be aimed ?

Why, . . Canada of course !

The United States has already proved to most of the world that they are not responsible with their use of weapons, "doing" Iraq was certainly not a DEFENSIVE move, nor was it responsible use of their massive power.

I LIVE in Northern Ontario, uncomfortably close to the site where the missiles used to be, and I'm quite sure that they will be put in the same place, the facilities are still active and usable . . .

So, I will be watching closely, and deciding on which CONTINENT may be safe to retire to . .

North America seems to becoming not quite the "New World" our forefathers dreamed of . .

(sigh)

10. Ancient history question?
Waaay back in the cold war era they had the DEW (Distant Early Warning) along or near the arctic circle. (My age is showing)

Were any of those radar stations and the mini-military bases that went with them in Canada or just along the North coast of Alaska and Greenland?

I'm trying to figure out if this is being put forward as an updated version of that program, since these are interceptors and not ICBM's according to the story as posted, or some totally new thing.

15. The problem is
it's Canadian soil, and Canadians - or a good many of us - want nothing to do with it.

Also, regardless of how the Martin government soft peddles, this is a step towards entangling us in the deployment of space-based weapons systems. And even more Canadians say Hell no to that.

Martin is Prime Minister by virtue of winning the Liberal leadership, and has received no mandate from Canadians for this policy shift.
