Howard Dean To Announce Major New Campaign On Health Care Reform

Looks like Howard Dean is well on his way to finding a post-DNC niche, and he won’t be needing the Obama administration to find it for him.

On a conference call with supporters later today, Dean will make a surprise announcement, unveiling a major new health care campaign that will gear up his political operation to pressure the White House and Congress to preserve a public insurance option as part of health care reform, I’m told.

The campaign will be called “Stand With Dr. Dean,” and its immediate goal is to build up a membership of a quarter million in the next few months, relying on the million-strong email list of Democracy for America, Dean’s political operation. The eventual goal is to organize and door-knock to build support for the public insurance option in Congressional districts across the country, DFA executive director Arshad Hasan tells me.

Supporters of Dean — a former doctor who has been looking for a meaningful way of impacting the coming health care reform push — were furious with Obama aides for not giving Dean a health care-related spot in the administration. This new project to push Obama and Congress towards a public option is Dean’s post-DNC solution, and his political operation could have a real impact on the coming health care debate.

1. Dean backs Obama's public/private plan, which is vulnerable to insurance only.
And he'll be on CNBC to tout. Great.

5. Dean may push hard enough that the public option has to be included
I don't have a lot of faith that the currrent players (other than Dean) won't cave to the health insurance companies and take that option out.

I don't understand what's wrong with these supposedly bright people who can't see that continuing to line the pockets of these for-profit health insurance crooks makes no sense at all and that single payer is the only way to go. Especially as it seems more and more employers are dropping health insurance altogether or offering plans with such high deductibles that they're not much better than no insurance at all.

22. Oh, they know, they know. Unfortunately, they also know
that the health insurance industry has control of a big portion of the GDP, which they are willing to use to smash anyone who threatens their survival. And national health insurance would destroy them--a for-profit system can never compete on a level playing field with a nonprofit plan.

25. Didn't Obama just say last night that we can't depend on financial groups
as part of the GNP? And insurance companies are financial groups. And, they're a group that are making it more difficult for every other American industry to compete with foreign companies.

They are nothing better than hedge fund folks. With a lethal and morbid outcome for those who have to pay them, or else.

53. John Russell Advocated for Single Payer Reform In 2006 and 2008! Medicare4ALL
Edited on Wed Mar-25-09 09:29 PM by DaLittle Kitty
Has been a key component of Russell's plan, particularly in 2008. John Russell is a Nurse Practitioner (ARNP Acute Care) and also has an MBA in Health Systems Management. John has analyzed our health care system and has offered the rationale behind his advocacy for a National Single Payer Plan that will strengthen the fiscal foundation of Medicare which is in far worse shape financially than Social Security.

John with his background will be a great ally for Dr Dean in his fight. I spoke with John recently and he was very concerned and outright p/o'ed about Obama's pick for Secretary of Health who was touted as having the right experience for the job ... because she was State Insurance Commissioner! JOHN WAS PISSED OFF!!! It is up to us to fight the insurance industry by standing up to the LOBBYISTS of CORPORATE AMERICA! It WAS the stinking LOBBYIST pressure that kept Howard Dean from being named Secretary of Health and Human Services! It IS ALL 'bout Da $Money!!!

According to John a National Single Payer Plan will help to save our economy by leveling the playing field for American business comparable to our global competitors. It will strengthen our workforce by improving the health of our workers and improve the quality and quantity of life for the average American citizen.

Go to www.johnrussellforcongress.com and pull down issues and go to health care sub-divided into a number of topics from problems to solutions. Thank you John for your work on behalf of working America!:)

83. Maybe they see it as a way of getting rid of "undesirables" in society
Edited on Thu Mar-26-09 08:56 AM by Lorien
we can't afford insurance, and even if we can we can't afford the deductible (mine is $5,700.00), so we don't have checkups or preventative care. We won't catch the cancer or anything else in time to have a prayer of being able to afford to be saved, so we'll conveniently die off. More resources for the only people worthy of them; the rich! They've got it all worked out. Now if they can just find a way to make our air and water even more filthy and our food supply even more unsafe their plan will be foolproof!

By "preserving public insurance option" does he simply mean that he wants to counter Emanuel's plan to eliminate Medicare coverage?

How can Dean ask people for support when we don't even know what plan he is offering yet? I couldn't find out much about it.

Dean is petitioning for a "public option" on health care reform.

Usually referred to as "Medicare for all", it's main benefits are the big savings in overhead costs, versus private - for profit - insurance; equality in access; and affordability.

While the Obama Administration is moving on health care reform, Dr. Dean's effort is a "push" from the local, grass roots for universal health care to be included in the discussion of options.

Scare-mongers call it socialism and claim some nefarious government "control" over medical decisions.

Balderdash! It's a more efficient delivery system and one that works well in the rest of the industrialized world.

I really didn't like Dean in '04 but have been very impressed with what he has done since then. Maybe this is his destiny. To be a constant source for change outside of the system. Perhaps this is better than if he were a member of the administration. We have Obama's people pushing from one side, Dean's organization pushing from another -- this gives us a diversity of voices, opinions, and organizing styles, coming from different angles, pushing toward essentially the same goal.

56. not sure about medicare
but christmas '07 one of the CA assembly repugs said that health care for all would cost an additional 40% in taxes. I looked at my pay stub & figured that would be an 8% increase and that for me and my family I was paying 10%. Meaning I would pay less for my health care & everybody in CA would be covered. I imagine on a national level I would see even more of a savings because of the buying power.
I want to know what happened to the Obama that smacked HRC with, the problem is that people can't afford health insurance & until that is fixed it does not matter what you do.

77. I'd like to know how we can afford trillions for wars and bailouts
and not afford to ensure the health of those paying for them.

51. It is beyond pathetic that Dean, abandoned by the President who he helped put in power,

....has to network OUTSIDE the democratic party to advocate for REAL health lo reform.

THIS is why Dean didn't get HHS.

He wouldn't play ball with big insurance.

Flame me all day long. But, I am not at all happy with Obama & the 'new' democrat administration.

LOVE YEAH HOWARD DEAN - COUNT ME IN!

59. This is perfect, actually

Because it is coming from outside the administration it gives Obama a way to include this legislation without pushing it himself. Even he doesn't have the political capital to say "we are doing single payer," but with public support can perhaps make it an option in a way that does not seem like he is breaking a campaign promise.

66. Leave the criminal insurance companies out!
Why can't "We The People" have health care like our rich politicians? They are rich, and do not need it, the rest of us need health care. So many have to work just to pay the criminal insurance companies. Europe is way ahead of us. Get rid of the insurance companies and do something about the crooked drug companies! We must get the money out of politics. Tax payers should pay for the campaigns so the rich corporations can't bribe those who are running. If you don't have money you have to depend on the rich to get you elected. That is a no brainer! Corporations do not want tax payers to pay for campaigns. We must fight for it.

We need him to fight for us even with Obama in office. I had a feeling things would work out. I can't wait to help out.

86. I want to push him farther than that
A public option with private insurers still allowed to exist should only be a fallback Plan B. But ferchrissakes! Why START a negotiation with a compromise? Start by demanding single payer, now!
