USO puts on a show for Franken
Source: Minneapolis-St.Paul Star Tribune

WASHINGTON - Al Franken, the "Saturday Night Live" alum, former radio host and current Senate candidate, laid a wreath in Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday before being honored for his 10 years of service with the USO entertaining U.S. troops abroad.

Franken, who is embroiled in a protracted legal standoff with Norm Coleman in the Minnesota U.S. Senate race, received the United Service Organizations' Merit Award for his service, which stretches back to the end of the war in Kosovo.

Thirty-six of the nation's 98 living Medal of Honor recipients were on hand for the USO award ceremony, along with actress Renée Zellweger.

"Some of the troops knew I'd been a critic of the way we'd gotten into the war, and the way we were doing the war," he said. "But in a way, they didn't care. It just told them that everybody in the States supported them. It didn't matter what your politics were."

2. Why is this guy not in the US Senate where he belongs?
And why aren't people in Minnesota demanding he be seated. This bullshit has gone on for almost six months - he has been deprive of 2 months of his term (over 4%).

I'm glad to see him getting props from the USO. Nobody has given more.

Coleman agree, even tho they obfuscate displeasure. The writing is on the wall - the law is there and the judges are being very fair. No Cheney Baker-Supreme Court rulings in MN. The judges agreed to some recounting and we might know something next week. If Franken holds his lead - he can be certified by the Sec of State which should clear the way for Congress to agree. Coleman and Ginzburg and all the corporations backing Coleman than have to decide if they proceed with suits. But perhaps Franken can be seated. All proscribed.

The delay has been stubborness, calculated delay, money to throw around, and desperation by Republicans to keep the Dem count at 49. Coleman is personally desperate to stay in so he can clear all his bills and become a multi-millionaire.

11. Uh, you mean "keep the Dem count at 59", right?
Or did I miss the part where we lost a ton of seats AFTER the election.

Oh well, it could be worse. The GOP governor in Minn could've appointed Coleman acting senator to fill the vacancy 'til the case was settled.

12. When Gore Vidal was asked what he thought of Al being a Senator
he said, he won't be very useful but, considering what we have there already, it's not like he'll bring the average down.

13. I'm glad to see him get props, but people have given for longer than 10 years. Not to
take away from him. If he keeps this up, he will eventually catch up to folks who have been at it a lot longer.

10. What I don't understand is why he isn't allowed to take his rightful place and enjoy his win, and if
challenged, that is merely a side issue.

Why is he being barred from participation in the Senate seat
he won, fair and square?
