Doctors Say Kidney Stones In Kids Are On The Rise
Source: Associated Press

(03-26) 13:26 PDT Chicago (AP) --

Doctors are puzzling over what seems to be an increase in the number of children with kidney stones, a condition some blame on kids' love of cheeseburgers, fries and other salty foods.

Kidney stones are usually an adult malady, one that is notorious for causing excruciating pain — pain worse than childbirth. But while the number of affected children isn't huge, kids with kidney stones have been turning up in rising numbers at hospitals around the country.

At Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the number of children treated for kidney stones since 2005 has climbed from about 10 a year to five patients a week now, said Dr. Pasquale Casale.

Johns Hopkins Children Center in Baltimore, a referral center for children with stones, used to treat one or two youngsters a year 15 or so years ago. Now it gets calls about new cases every week, said kidney specialist Dr. Alicia Neu.

In a 2007 study in the Journal of Urology, doctors at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Medical Center reported a nearly fivefold increase in children brought in with kidney stones between 1994 and 2005. In 2005, 61 youngsters were treated there for stones.

Of course none of this could be caused by melamine contaminated food products from China...

5. Less water more soda
If cheeseburgers and french fries were the culprit, I would have had them long ago. That used to be my staple when I was in college, that and beer.

Don't do much of either now. Broke the soda habit last fall when the doctor told me it was a contributor to my ulcer.

10. My thought as well.
In addition to drinking less water, the caffeine in soft drinks is also a diuretic.

3. Drink more water and all stones are not caused by the same thing.
Edited on Thu Mar-26-09 04:22 PM by AlCzervik
my husband had them a few years ago, no more Coke, peanuts or chocolate for him and he now drinks 8 to glasses of water a day. I had my gallbladder out about 20 years ago and stone fucking hurt! I had natural hard labor--no drugs and that hurt way less then a gallbladder attack.

7. I've had both major kinds -- and believe me, it's no way to get stoned.
And it shouldn't be happening to so many kids.

15. When I was a kid, parasites were common everywhere
Then suddenly, almost overnight, parasites became almost non existant in American society. I often ask myself how this was able to occur. Did Medicine overnight discover a miracle cure for a many parasites that are know to infect the Human Organism? Did our Industrialized food supply kill all parasites so effectively that they were no longer an issue?

Well, after much research and investigation, the parasites are still around, but they are effectively ignorned by the medical industry. We see stories now and then about some crackpot trying to sue a restaurant about the 5 foot tapeworn found in his somach, and thats all we hear about it. We assume that our extremely wasteful "Flush and Forget" sewage systems are adequate to protect us all from contracting parasites.

I once spoke to someone who traveled in India, where parasites are common and well understood. This person described how they test and treat parasites, and related how difficult they were to properly diagnose due to the different larval stages they go through. It is surprising that none of these techniques are even taught in American Medical institutions.

There is a theory that parasites, and there dying bits can act as a nucleus to the formation of Gall Stones, Kidney Stones and for other infections. It is also know that Infections can alter the amount of Ionic Calcium in the bloodstream. Study on the effects of disease and diet are hapahazard, the maintain the status quo in regards to the industrialized food suppy, which is almost criminal in it promotion of unhealthy food.

The recent "Destruction" read Processing into food, of 1.4 million Sanderson Farms chicken for the HerpesViridae Laryngeotrachial outbreak in Texas on March 20th, 2009 is a glimpse into the hoorors of Factory Farming on our food security. The recent prohibition on Chicken imports from the U.S. by Russia shows that the Russians found adulterants such as Tetracyclyne and an Anti-Protozoan parasite chemical in the chickens, shows that parasite are known, rampant and do exist. The statement that Tyson or Sanderson Farms does not use these medications may be true, because Tyson and Sanderson Farms are not in fact "Growing and Taking care of the Chickens" They subcontract out these duties to the individual farmers that are the ones on the hook to keep the birds alive long enough to be shipped off and join the millions of other birds slaughtered each week. Tyson got out of the Chicken Farming business years ago. They offloaded that money losing operation onto individual suckers that don't know any better.

20. Went to a lecture on Public Health and Climate change given by Al Gore
last night at ETSU. (He was great!!!) He said that as Climate Change increases, there is a rise in kidney stones among the population.

Here is a link to a study: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/115140.php
