Conn. Thieves Steal $1 million Worth Of Cigarettes
Source: Associated Press

MILFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut police say $1 million worth of cigarettes were stolen from a warehouse over the weekend.

Police say the thieves who broke into Montano Cigarettes, Candy & Tobacco Inc. stole some 15,000 cartons of cigarettes.

Investigators say Saturday's theft in Milford was well planned. The burglars disabled lighting and security systems, and then used a ladder to scale a concrete wall and enter through a roof hatch.

Surveillance cameras were able to catch only some of the action.

16. Hope the bodega owner who sells them to you is strong armed into selling them as well?
Some thick necked goons tell the owner he WILL sell the cigarettes THEY provide to him, tax stamps be damned. And if he gets caught selling them sans tax stamp by the authorities the bodega owner gets to face the fines and possible prison time. What a great thing to support.

Yeay organized crime!

The bodegas are monitored by the tax man.

4. That onerous cigarette tax is to go into effect this week.
Black MKts will open up everywhere.

If as many people as they claim do not smoke, then this tax
is hypocrisy. There is no way they can collect enough to
pay for health care. Fuzzy Math. They know they will
not collect the needed funds. A little honesty is too much
to expect.

Look for money order sales to skyrocket too..

If you use a check or credit card to buy cigarettes from the indians, calif comes after you for taxes "not paid"...

Nobody on Earth is going to buy black market cigarettes knowing that it will deny money to the essential SCHIP program.

6. This is the direct result of over-taxing tobacco
and you'll see far more, again, because of the stupid tax increases on tobacco.

All it has done is inflame the black market for smokes.

25. Correct.
I see people come into local convenience stores in Virginia and buy 15 cartons of smokes at a clip. Guess where they're going? To DC, NY and other places where the taxes are even more ridiculous than they are in VA or MD.

38. My sentence was a bit skewed.
"Pathetic" was supposed to be a modifier for thieves, not the addicts. That wasn't what I ended up writing, however.

And I disagree about that hard-wired addictive tendencies. That smacks of the worst sort of claptrap to me. Most of us aren't addicted to anything.

Edited on Wed Apr-01-09 02:51 PM by ixion
Mark Twain said that, and I would agree.

edit to add: but you're right. my initial post was skewed as well. I meant that we (mammals) are hard-wired with the desire to alter our perception of reality. That does not implicitly lead to addiction.

so point taken. :hi:

Revolt my ass. Looting and theft are just that.

If you want to revolt, quit smoking, or seriously reduce your use. Now THAT will kill the cigarette companies.

Anarchy is NOT the answer. Anarchy is great for creativity, but theft is CRIME.

Not against the tobacco companies. And this sort of thing is going to continue. I already buy my smokes online but if a couple of cases "fall off" a truck nearby I will take advantage of that as well.
