Back in the hunt? Stevens files for 2014 election
Source: KTUU

Wednesday, April 8, 2009

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Ted Stevens has filed to run again in the 2014 race for U.S. Senate, but it doesn't necessarily mean he wants his old seat back.

The reason could be as simple as wanting to keep raising and spending campaign money.

Stevens filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Elections Commission earlier this year and could be gearing up to make another run against Sen. Mark Begich.......

Stevens intends to do one of two things, said Stanley Brand, a Washington, D.C., attorney who specializes in politics and criminal defense.
"(Either) he truly intends to be a candidate at some point, or he is leaving opening the possibility so that he can defray his legal expenses," Brand said.

1. At the age of 107*?
What a nut!

*May not be Ted Stevens' real age.

3. According to our local news,
this is purely to defray legal expenses. But he's being idolized up here now, like he's been completely exonerated or something. It's totally pathetic. You might be interested to read this piece at Progressive Alaska http://progressivealaska.blogspot.com/2009/04/heres-to-rep-mike-doogan.html

Politics in Alaska never ceases to amaze.

5. the spin factories are in high gear, re-erecting the Stevens image to nowhere
People believe anything, it seems. Maybe we need to focus on education and IQ.

10. I read that, and I agree it was an excellent response.

Also I'm very disappointed in the Anchorage Daily News which has apparently been censoring out comments to their online article about this, even when they're polite and on point, that are critical of the legislature's resolution yesterday. Our political situation up here is in a complete shambles.

13. ADN has always been a rightwing mouthpiece
Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 10:45 AM by Tempest
Even back in the 70s and 80s when I lived up there.

They got especially bad when Palin was elected. They fawn all over her, and attack anyone who criticizes her.

But what do you expect? Her mouthpiece came from ADN's staff.

17. Actually, Bill McAllister and Meg Stapleton both came from the KTUU
news department, our local NBC affiliate, but I agree that the ADN has done a fair amount of fawning.

Can't remember who it was, but he was a reporter for the newspaper.

23. The only (former) reporter I know of is Rep. Mike Doogan
who got in some hot water with the local bloggers recently for outing the identity of anonymous blogger Mudflats. I don't consider him a Palin apologist though, although all of the legislature has given her more leeway than she deserves, IMO.

I'd be really interested to know who you're thinking of.

Oh, wait, maybe you're thinking of Larry Persily, who used to be her chief of staff. I have some respect for him because he did state during the campaign that she was in no way qualified to be vice president. There are a couple of interesting posts by him here at HuffPo. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/larry-persily/

I doubt that Sarah has much use for him these days.

It was early in her administration so it sounds like he fits the bill.

Hey Blue, what city/town/village in the state do you live? I just wanted to know where in the state I'm talking with when we go back and forth.

29. I lived in Spenard (no jokes) and on the east side

My sister and her family (well, husband now since the kids flew the coop) still live in the same house my parents bought back in 1975. Moose still come into the back yard, even though the area has been built up.

33. I hope it's not as bad as it was in the 70s

There were so many domestic abuse calls, mostly involving shootings, that the cops called it a "Spenard divorce".

There were three of the shootings in my block alone in less than a year.

36. It's meth and pot dealers where my sister lives

They changed the zoning for the East 10th Avenue around Muldoon from single dwelling to multi-dwelling and several apartment buildings went up around my sister's house.

They're having problems with the meth dealers mostly. The house was broken into once when my sister was there and she ran him off with a .30-.30 rifle.

I told her she should have shot him, but she said she didn't want to have to clean the carpet and by the time she got outside, they were already down the street. Otherwise she said she would have shot him in the yard.

Begich's campaign against Stevens. A lot of Hollywood folk seem to have kicked in for that. Cool.

Stevens was going down to defeat before the indictment. Alaskans were sick of his corruption.

Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 11:53 AM by Blue_In_AK
would have won. They're just very sore losers. And I don't think they've thought through the fact that Ted would be 91 YEARS OLD at the end of another six-year term. It's just crazy to think that he would still be competent to be a senator. He's having trouble speaking clearly even now.

It was definitely time for some new blood from Alaska. Ted and his supporters should just be thanking their lucky stars that the prosecutors blew it on this one, because in my mind, and the minds of most people I know, he's guilty as sin.

But only so he can collect campaign funds to pay for his legal fees.

What a piece of shit.

24. That is, SOME Alaskans,
and the rest of us are just laughing at them and calling them idiots.

There's no way there's going to be another election. Mark didn't commit any kind of election fraud or anything to earn his seat, so he did nothing wrong.

If they want a do-over on this one, we should all get a do-over on Sarah Palin, as well, because she certainly isn't the person she presented herself to be when she was running for governor in 2006. I know of many people here who are suffering from voter's remorse for putting her into power.

26. I read most of the comments on ADN about this

And the comments were overwhelmingly in agreement that Palin and the rightwingers calling for a special election were jackasses.

Even posters who admitted to being Republicans called it asinine.
