Obama releases Reagan records
Source: Politico

President Barack Obama is ordering the release of nearly a quarter of a million pages of records from the Reagan White House that were kept from the public during a lengthy review by President George W. Bush.
The Reagan documents – which include presidential briefing papers, speechwriting research materials and declassified foreign policy records — are expected to be released Monday.

Officials said the Obama administration’s quick verdict on the documents was prompted by an executive order Obama signed in January that gives the incumbent president 30 days to make such a decision, unless he sets a longer period. By contrast, Bush’s executive order on presidential records set no time limit on the White House’s review.
“With regard to the Reagan Administration records, I am writing to inform you that the President has not asserted executive privilege over any of this material,” White House Counsel Greg Craig wrote in a letter Thursday obtained by POLITICO.

“Pursuant to the President’s Executive Order, NARA may release these records — opening close to 250,000 pages of history,” Craig wrote to the director of the presidential libraries unit at the National Archives and Records Administration, Nancy Kegan Smith.
A smaller batch of 797 pages from President George H.W. Bush’s presidential library on the topic of Saudi Arabia also has been cleared for release Monday.

44. I love the pic, but
Carter is the one who started the arming of Bin Laden by authorizing the CIA's Operation Cyclone to purposely lure the Soviets into invading Afghanistan so we could keep their opponents armed, effectively creating the Soviets' own Vietnam.

Reagan implemented it.

For simply continuing a Carter program?

We can criticize him for not canceling it for sure. But if we do Carter deserves his fair share of the blame for creating it. Carter would have supplied the funds if he had been reelected.

Edited on Sat Apr-11-09 04:07 AM by fujiyama
I'm admittedly skeptical how much will be released - and how much won't be classified for "national security".

If it's a bunch of pages where half the stuff is blacked out, it'll be useless. Then again, the Obama people could be pissed over Cheney's recent deranged outbursts. Maybe these documents will reveal some juicy details. Then again, most likely I'm sure all that was shredded long ago...

This seems to be a good start - Let's hope this begins a new era of transparency that's much needed.

why we needed to go into a sovereign foreign nation and blow it back to the Dark Ages have any qualms or reservations about destroying evidence of wrong doing by the old fart that is the idol of their party or of the father of their 'president'? Does anyone beside me think that they would have to be crazy to leave evidence of any REAL criminal acts around for the time Dems reclaimed the government?

edit: Not condoning it. Just saying the party of liars and criminals wouldn't hesitate a heartbeat to commit what they would see as just another necessary act to protect themselves.

Grenada was to deflect attention from the massacre of US Marines in Lebanon two days prior.

KAL-007 was part of a large operation involving the Space Shuttle Challenger which recorded how the USSR would "turn on". A lot more blood is on that grade B actor's hands than you think.

73. What does it matter?
The records have been purged and cleaned and shredded.

And, the masses don't believe actual records, they believe what they are told, what they want to believe.

78. Not so fast...looks like some will be "withheld"...GRRRR!!!

The "juicy" stuff.

From the article:

"However, there were indications that the most contested presidential records from the Reagan era might not be among the roughly 250,000 pages cleared for release by Obama.

Nelson’s group fought a court battle for about a dozen documents, including memoranda about possible pardons for Iran-Contra figures such as Oliver North and John Poindexter. Representatives of former President Reagan objected to the release of those documents and were backed up in almost all instances by lawyers for President Bush. A federal judge ruled that the requesters’ had no legal grounds to overcome the incumbent president’s assertion of privilege.

Craig’s letter says Reagan’s representative approved of the release of the documents the White House cleared on Thursday, making it unlikely the files contain the same records that led to the court battle. A representative for the elder Bush also consented to have his documents released, officials said."

86. excuse me but you need to do some homework
you can start here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occult

After you learn the true meaning of the word you can consider this:
Not all that study occult wisdoms are of the dark side..just so you understand and stop painting everyone with the same brush.

While the republican party seems to be a Cult, and an evil one at that, I would not say they had studied much of the occult because if they had, they would hardly chose the losing side now would they? The Darkness cannot stand before the Light.

If you don't know anything about the occult secrets, how will you battle them?

I have studied for over 50 years all of the Metaphysical, occult, nature-based and religious information I could get my hands on. First to understand myself and my own experiences and then to try to understand everything else about this wonderful journey we call a life. That may make me an occultist/shaman/witch/Wiccan/Native American Medicine/Hinduism/Buddhist/Zen/Chinese Thought/New Physics/psychic/Religious Scholar/Druid/Baptist/Mormon/New Age/Protastant/Islamic/Born Again/Adventist/Catholic/etc,etc,/put your favorite label here person, but it cetainly doesn't make me evil. Nor a Republican
